Jeff Has built my 3rd SML now and sent me a pic of her...... It is a TC encore/Brux light contour finished at 26" plus brake. I would like to hear some info from other people that have Break action guns on what loads/velocities/powder/bullet/max loads ect ect combos they are using and with what kind of accuracy i can expect.. Also i am needing a name for her....... I now own the "land cannon" (Complete custom) and "Thumper"(ultimate conversion)... Now this one has been built..... thinking i will call her "Baby Sis" or "Sissy"... you all can help with a name ideas??

I use Harvester 45/40 blue sabots and 60 grains of IMR-4198 Here one target I found. Some use the Harvester crush rib sabots but my converted 45-70 barrel likes the regular. I have shot bare bullets sized to the bore but I settled on the afore mentioned load Good Luck love the furniture nothing like pretty wood

With a break a lot hotter load with heavier bullets easy to do.

I can say in mine I ended up shooting 55 Grains of 4198 and the Pittman 275 accu Max's and that gun loved that combo!

I'm shooting 65 grains of imr4198 and 275 Accumax at 2800 fps out of the exact same barrel but mine is 28 inches plus a brake. Accuracy is better in my gun from 62-65 grains and the brake tames the recoil. Best groups are .75 to 1 inch at 100 yds. Both days I've shot this gun in windy conditions. I bet it can be dialed into a cloverleaf with ideal conditions. Awesome barrel and excellent machine work by Mr Hankins........

Another beautiful gun by Jeff!!!
Can anyone explain why the first (cold shot) is high and slightly to the left. I took my Encore out yesterday to test some new loads and I got the exact same result. I was shooting 60 and 61 grains of i3031 in a an Encore/Bergara 44 cal, 22 inch barrel with a brake and a Magneto Speed attached. Is it common for an Apex to have the first shot so high or is it just a coincidence that my group was the same?
By the way, the velocities were 2,375 FPS with 60 grains and 2,414 FPS with 61 grains using 3031 and 250 grain bullets.

I have a H&R 45/70 conversion and found that shooting the 270 gr parker match hunters with 55gr of h4198 and a .06 veggie wad shot the best for me.

Is the barrel clean for the first shot? Is the difference between a cold, then warmer already fouled barrel or a clean vs fouled barrel?

Is the barrel clean for the first shot? Is the difference between a cold, then warmer already fouled barrel or a clean vs fouled barrel? My first shots are from a clean barrel and were shot at 80 degree ambient temperature. Subsequent shots were shot 5 minutes apart to allow the barrel to cool between shots.

Deadeye, Nice rifle and great shooting. How about naming your rifle "triple play" since it's your 3rd Hankins build? Hank converted a Bergara 45-70 barrel for my Encore. My best groups are running around 2180 fps using Hornady FTX 325gr bullet sized to 0.451 over 54gr of IMR 4198 using Remington large/mag rifle primers. Attached pic is most recent 4 shot 100 yd group. Attachments:

First Beautiful gun and some fine trigger work. About cold bore....puzzles me. I have an Encore Pacnor 25" . I shoot it saboted and clean it between shots with 93% isopropyl alcohol. If I don't shoot it during season I have left it loaded for a year in the safe. Knocked the center out of the bullseye at 100yds every year when I get it back out. And my bolt guns I unload. But when I get them back out the POI. Stays the same also. I wonder what this is caused by also. drop

I just had jeff hankins build me the same gun and i just received it a week ago : I bought everything needed with the gun from Jeff including a die to press form my own bare pittman 275 grain bullets to bore size. I am totally a newbie to the SML, and this is my first , so i was a tad worried about bore sizing bullets since i have never done it before nor do i have any help. I discovered instantly that i had saboted 200 grain 40/ 45 cal bullets around and they worked perfectly in the drop barrel i received which got me thinking why i couldn't just use these for ease of use mainly especially when on distant hunt trips. My main concern was burning/blowing up the plastic sabot, and what powder I could or had to use to make it work. This thread is cool because i wasn't sure about accuracy using a saboted round vrs a bare bullet, load , powder, primer. Since i haven't even shot yet i was going to be looking for info on this topic : and here it is. QUESTION FOR SABOT USERS: 1) What interval do you clean your barrel when shooting sabots 2) do you still use a large magnum rifle primer with your IMR4198 3) what kind of grouping are you getting past 100 yards THX

How often you clean your gun is a matter of personal preference, there are some members that clean their gun after each use and others not. I am primarily a hunter first, I sight my gun in and once done I will not clean my firearm until the end of the season. 2. Again a matter of personal preference with the primers, I have tried both standard and magnum primers. I decided to stay with magnum to ensure good ignition in frequent inclement hunting situations. 3. I shoot 55 grains IMR 4198,.060 veggie wad and a Accumax 275's will shoot under 1" at 100 yards all day long. I do not use sabots, the Pittman Accumax's will generally have a better BC then the 200 grain saboted bullet you referenced. For hunting purposes I would stick with the Pittman's vs a 200 grain saboted load. 200 yards with Pittman 275 Accumax's Good luck and welcome to SML's

Now that is one crazy good looking camo paint job! What caliber is the rifle chambered in? I'll be curious to learn how she shoots; however, I'm pretty sure I already know what I'll read.
