I'm sure others have had this issue also. After the gun has sat for a week or so the barrel fouling hardens up and the loading pressure is higher. I have noticed the first couple shots are off a little and then they settle in. I don't store the gun with the breech plug installed so for the last 2 weeks before heading to the range I have brushed the barrel about 10 strokes with a dry brush, then run 4 dry patches through it, put in the plug and head out to shoot. After doing this for the last 2 weeks my 300 yard cold shots have been right on the bull and the following shots right right there for the group.
I have found that after cleaning it takes me about 4 shots to get settled back in for consistent groups. I don't want to mess with cleaning during the season so this has been working to get me a consistent cold shot.

I run a bullet thru the barrel twice before hunting or range time. First shot is in the group like the 4th or 11th. This way my lands get cleaned up but my grooves stay fouled.

Buckstuds, do you use a bullet sized to shoot when you run the bullet thru to clean the lands or do you use a tighter fitting bullet ?

Yes you run your sized bullet through the barrel and it cleans the fouling (chalk) off the lands.
Buckstuds is referring to method used by some members as well as moderator "hillbill".
To quote hillbill;
"I have learned over the years that on a fouled barrel that has set for a while the powder residue gets very dry and chalky making bullet fit very tight. the fix is to take the plug out and run a bullet through after shooting thus pushing the fouling off of the lands. when you decide to load for a hunting trip you are good to go and your barrel is still fouled."
Good luck

I no longer have that problem since switching to IMR3031.
