Well guys,,,, I had a choice today of either sighting in my new 8-32X56 NXS of making a lid for the new cast iron kettle I got in on Friday. So I decided to work on the kettle lid.. I can sight my rifle in next Friday if I have too..
Ok to make a long story short.. I have a 5 gallon kettle and we filled it to the top at the last shoot with Dads home made bean soup. Once it was done and we started eating the 5 gallon kettle was empty pretty quick,, so I ordered a new, big as I could get delivered by UPS kettle.. This guy is 13 gallon,, bad thing is you can't buy a lid for it... So I have a good friend that runs a sheet metal shop and asked him yesterday if he would burn me a 22 inch diameter piece of 11 gauge stainless steel and a 5/8 strip the I could tig weld around the outside of it.. He said yes, when do you need it.. I said, yesterday,,, so he got right on it for me and I picked up the pieces last night at midnight, on my way home from the RR.. I de-burred it and welded it all together today.. Made a handle and it's ready for cooking.
The kettle came to me with a thick coating of what looked like black wax so I heated up the kettle with the burner and helped it out some with my torch.. I got it hot enough to burn off all the wax and then coated it inside and out with some Crisco,, so it should be seasoned and ready for use..
I have a meal planned for Saturday and I'll be using this kettle,, hope it turns out as it a new dish I've never made before....
Here is the new kettle,, with the Supervisor always watching to make sure it's done to his satisfaction...
