Ok boys, in one of Jeff's videos, he made the comment that you wouldn't want to hunt with the brake on if I understood correctly. I hunt exclusively from elevated huts that have solid benches to shoot from. Each hut is also equipped with hearing protection for any that come along. Any reason not to use the brake??

I prefer not to use a brake while hunting because sometimes the shots can come in quick and you might not have time to put in your hearing protection. If you are elevated and hunt open fields then you do have a little more controll over your ear protection.. if the deer is a long shot and standing still then you have time to put in the ear plugs,, if he is way off and running you are not going to shoot him anyway... so it really depends on what you want to do.

I wear these. It amplifies sounds and instantly deadens sounds when the gun goes off

I hunt with the break. Last year I used a set of QB2's, the ear plugs on a plastic band, here at home. Hunting in the open fields out in Iowa I just put in ear plug the whole time I sat in the blind. This year I just broke down and bought a set of Soundgear plugs. I won gun hunt without some kind of hearing protection anymore, break or not.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something from a ballistic standpoint. Just shot my Hankins sml today for the second time. Groups are incredible. Far surpassed my expectations! Jeff did a phenomenal job!!! Couldn't be happier.

Most of the places I hunt there is not enough time to put in ear plugs and I can't wear muffs because they get in the way of good cheek weld.
Make sure if you are going to hunt without the brake that you also sight in with it off. If your shots are only 100 yards probably will make little difference but could at further distances.

I like the amplification factor mostly.

As long as the shooter and any accompanying bystanders are equipped with hearing protection I say use the brake. The problem arises when you have a deer run in quickly and either you loose the shot opportunity to putting on the protection, or take the shot in a hurry and cause permanent hearing damage. Which ever method you decide to use is a personal choice and the hunting conditions will normally make the decision for you.

I wear ear plugs that are attached by a string.
I hang them around my neck and can quickly put then in when necessary.
I would say 90% of the time the deer give me the opportunity to use such, however with the remaining 10% I would not want to be shooting a gun with a muzzle-break.
My TC Encore conversion gun without a muzzle-break is loud on its own.
It comes down to personal choice, the muzzle-break on a light weight gun such as the TC/ CVA conversions takes a great amount of the recoil out of the gun and certainly makes the gun more enjoyable to shoot if you spend any significant time at the range on the bench.
