Hi Guys,
I haven't been around much lately as I've been kind of bummed out having issues with some Chronic Back pain and thinking I would not be able to hunt this year. Anyway, long story short, I've been working through it with my "Physical Terrorist" and was able to make my annual M/L hunting trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA.
Although I wasn't able to hunt as hard, or, for as long as I usually do, I was still able to have a great trip and was blessed with being able to break in my new Hankins Apex Conversion (which I've dubbed "The Woods Assassin") by harvesting a 3 pt. and 9 pt. buck for the freezer. I had Jeff make me this conversion to use strictly as a close range portable tree stand gun for the type of hunting I do in the Mountains.
My load was 200 gr. SST / 32 GR. N-110 & HLBS. Both deer were shot out of a portable tree stand @ approx. 18 ft. high. The 3 Pt. was a broadside shot @ 25 yds., bullet entered behind left shoulder and did not exit, deer ran about 15 yds. in a half circle and piled up.
The 9 Pt. was about 15 ft. from the base of my tree and hit high behind right shoulder and exited low behind left shoulder. He staggered about 20 feet and crumbled.
I'd like to thank Jeff again for making me the perfect gun for my hunting needs, I couldn't be happier with my choice.
I'd also like to thank Hillbill, Jims, Dannoboone and the others who gave me the confidence to use the 200 SST's when I was having some doubts about how they may perform, they worked flawlessly.
Sorry for not getting a pic of the 9 Pt. in the woods, I shot him right at last shooting light and didn't try getting a pic then. These were taken a few days later when I took him out of the Walk-in Cooler at our camp to quarter him for the trip home.

Thanks deadeye,
Yes, the 200 SST's worked great. I was wanting to use the 195 Barnes but sighted in with the SST's while Barnes was having issues with the 195's. I do have some of the new lot 195's though and will hopefully be trying them soon also.

Congrats,I just broke in the apex Jeff Hankins did for me also with 3 freezer meat deer in west Tenn. I didn't have any SST bullets so I used TC shockwave 200gr hlbs 56gr h4198. Very effective.

Congratulations! Lots of meat for the freezer with that hunt.
With that light of a load (32gr N110), I would be concerned about the 195gr Barnes opening up at very much distance.

Congratulations on a successful hunt and a nice buck.. I am glad the Apex conversion worked out for you.. It worked like a Charm Jeff, and it is exactly what I was looking for in a "Woods Rifle".

I don't mind beefing up my charge with the 195 Barnes load. With the SST's being more frangible than the 195 Bx's I didn't want to push the SST's too fast so I settled on the light 32 gr. load for them as it was really accurate in my Apex. I have some of the new run 195's that I'll be working up a load with after the season. Appreciate the info. Thanks,
YB
