Went to the range alone for the first time in years. Between Bill, Herman and myself, we could not get together! I only spent a couple of hours and did not get all my “stuff” tested. I did want to test some different ratio’s of Clays/4198. My test bullet for the first three groups was the 300 gr. XTP.
For what its worth, here is how I sized them:
First I under size them by about .0005”; this reduces the bullet so it will almost fall down the barrel. Now that I have the jacket and the lead compressed, I then knurl them……………….bringing up those little protrusions. Next I set my sizing die for a fit that allows a smooth even seating. Because only the protrusions (not the bullet itself) are larger…………when you seat, you are simply engraving the bumps and they easily cut into the lands. Of the 16 XTP’s and the SST’s I seated, every one of them felt perfect going down the barrel; even pressure all the way down.
Group one I used my standard 6/65.8---Clays/H-4198 (NO wads on any loads today)
The three shots included the fouler. Nothing exceptional but OK? Velocity at 2739 and ES at 20 fps.
For group 2 my load was 5/67 (down one on the Clays and up 1.2 on the 4198). This seemed to drop the velocity down to 2693 with ES at 25 fps. Group wise not too bad.
In group three I went back to 6 gr. on the Clays and stayed with 67 on the 4198. Not really different from the first load. Group just OK.
If any recall last week I was having trouble with the Mid Way SST type blems with and with out the wad in my 209 rifle. So this week, with them sized exactly like the XTP’s I fired a five shot group with my 6/65.8 duplex only in the HIS (Deep Purple) gun. While I would not say the group was good (all five in 1.8”) , it did put the middle three shots in .470” All in all, a far cry from what happened last week in the 209 gun. Now I have to figure out how to make them shoot in the 209 gun?
My last group was the 300 Pittman with the 6/65.8 duplex at 300 yards. While it was actually twice as large as the .792” group I shot last week, two of the shots wanted to be in the same hole. At 11:30 a.m. with bright sun, there was a lot of mirage on the target which “may” have contributed to the larger group or maybe a breeze I did not see or maybe just the shooter? I used the same scope setting as last week and it impacted pretty much in the same spot.
