I was having an issue with my Hankins .45 in which some of the primer modules would not hold a new primer after only 1 shot. When I first talked to Jeff about building me this barreled action I told him I was not totally convinced with the Carbide Bushings yet.I told Jeff I wanted a Breech Plug without the Carbide Bushing even though he tried to talk me out of it.Anyways, after looking everything over on the gun trying to figure out if there was something wrong why I was having issues with the modules my only discovery is that the vent hole had opened up to .047"
I sent Jeff a message here on the Board about this. This is the exact message that I sent:
Hi Jeff,
This is Richard Pickles. Last year you built me one of your .45 Cal Muzzys. I am having a issue with it and need your help/advice. I have fired a total of 14 shots from the gun. Out of the 14 shots fired, 8 of the primer modules will not hold a new primer. The last 2 shots I took, the primers were blown out of the back of the module. Here is what I'm using:
- 78 grains IMR 4198
- Wool Wad
- 275 Parker MH (Smooth Formed)
- Fed. Gold Medal Match Primers
Last year after getting the barreled action from you I only shot a total of 6 shots, all with superb accuracy. Out of those 6 shots, 1 of those primer modules would not hold a new primer. I thought nothing of it at the time seeing I had 24 more. This week I shot it again (8 shots total) with exactly the same load as last year, again with great accuracy. Temp outside was 55* and now out of the 8 shots fired,7 of the modules will not hold a new primer? The last 2 shots I took the primer was blown out of the module when I removed them from the bolt face. I have no idea if I'm doing something wrong or what? The one thing I also noticed after cleaning the gun is that the breech plug flash hole is a lot larger than the other new one you sent to me (you sent me 2 breech plugs) The new one measures in @ .032 - .033 and the one that I used for the 14 shots measures @ .047 Can this be the problem and if so what can I do to remedy it? I have a out of state Indiana hunt in 3 weeks and want to use this gun. If you would like me to give you a call instead of emailing let me know and I will. Thank you for your time Jeff ............. Rich Pickles
Jeff responded immediately and told me to give him a call on the phone. Jeff and I went over everything and he said he was going to send me out a new Carbide bushed Plug and some Modules. We also talked about Kyle's Accumax 275 Bullets and so I went ahead and ordered them on the same day from Kyle.Jeff also said that he does not use a Veggie or Wool Wad in his guns so this time I decided not to use them either.
Here is the 100 yard target that I shot today with the new Breech Plug and my new favorite 275 AccuMax's..I only had time to shoot the 2 loads listed, 76 and 78 grains IMR4198 I did not adjust the scope,I was only looking for grouping.
My hat goes off to both Jeff Hankins and Kyle Pittman for everything they are doing for us,you are both real stand-up guys! THANK YOU................ Rich
