I have a Savage 110 small shank action with a Brux barrel shank dimensions 1.062 and tapers to .712 . I am using Kyle Pittman's 275 grain bullets. 28" barrel need advice on what powder charges I can use with IMR 4198 powder or others just don't want to exceed the guns capacity. I am using Jeffs ignition system. Thanks for any help given.

Jeff could answer this best. I have only built one Savage with the small shank barrel. I will only install a barrel now without the barrel nut on a Savage. It doesn't matter if it is a small or large shank action I just won't install a M/L barrel that small in diameter anymore. That said I had a small shank Savage 45 for about a year and I shot up to 73grs of IMR 4198 with a 250 gr bullet and didn't go over 70grs with a 300 gr bullet and I had no problems.
When and if you every install your next barrel have it installed without using the barrel nut you will have a 1.250 shank and you can run that out a few inches yes it does make the gun a little heavier but the extra metal in the breech plug are and powder chamber area is really important for safety.

That barrel shank dimension is about the same as my break open. I keep my loads below 60gr of I4198 or equivelent. That's in my barrel. I would definetly keep your loads on the mild side with bullets under 275gr. JMO.... Plenty of deer killin' power.

That barrel is 1.050 straight for 5 inches,, I would say to stay at 70 grains or less of IMR 4198 and you should be fine.. You just don't have as much cushion if you were to ever double load it...
Elkman... I agree with you on the full 1.250 diameter barrels and that is the way I do them if I do the build at my shop,, but a lot of these guys want a pre-fit barrel that they can just screw on, set the head space and go to the woods... It works, and works good, just not the same as a heavy 1.250 barrel...

I dont go above 70gr of 4198 with a 275gr and 65gr with a 300gr in my small shank. If i ever get another barrel for it, it will be without the barrel nut.
