I have been talking with Kyle and messaging with others about working up a load for hunting this year. I will be shooting 3031 with the 325 accumax and using the Savage PTA HIS with a 28" Brux, 0.040 pure tungsten bushings. I have been concerned about using a single power for hunting in the cold. So I decided to satisfy my own OCD mind and do the freezer test. Loaded the gun last night with 85 grains of 3031, no wad, a 325 accumax, Priming module, and 2 finger cots covering the break for moisture I stuck it in the freezer for 26 hours. Took it out tonight covered in frost and right outside to shoot. WENT BANG WITH NO HESITATION.
So so after this test, and answering my wife on "what happen to our groceries and why is one of your rifles in the freezer" I won't worrie about a 3031 single in the cold. I just had to explain I hadn't lost my mind, it was to give me peace of mind!

Excellent test Kenny! I googled deep freezer temps and came up with 0 to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit as an average temperature. I'd say you're good for even colder temps. Now all we need is some cold weather to settle in.

I performed the same test earlier this year with a 275 Accumax and 78gr of 4198. It cracked my plug. Had to throw away the plug.

Just took the plug out and it looks fine, but I will clean it up and look again. Where did it crack?

I believe this same test would repeat with the 4198's, especially with the Hankins Ignition System.

Just took the plug out and it looks fine, but I will clean it up and look again. Where did it crack? It was a Savage plug and it cracked at the nose. Like anything else, materials get more brittle at very cold temps. I would like to thank you for your effort as I am planning to carry my 40cal with 3031 and HIS system some this season. I had no doubt that the HIS system would lite it that cold. Like the test I performed, I failed to chrono it to determine velocity loss./ temp stability.

My thought would be how much loss in velocity at that temp.

that is a good question, cold temps around the corner will tell the tale.

Well, maybe Kenny could shoot it under normal conditions and record the velocity and then put it back in the freezer and shoot it? Good test! No doubt Hanks system gets the fire to the powder in "short" order. The longer distance the flame has to travel in a 209 system might be a different story and hence benefit from a duplex?

If I can get home before dark, before I start getting it set up for hunting I can try it with and without the freezer if I can get enough light for the crony to work. I had a feeling the hot LMRP and short flame path was solid, but I had to prove it to myself. I took the scope off so I have to remount it and get it ready to go to Iowa.
Looks like my other CF will be off to Jeff for a rebarrel after the first of year!

Great test, thanks for the report.
I to would be interested in seeing the results with 4198.
