I'm currently shooting a 300gr BE with H4198. My barrel is a 24" Brux. Seems I'm maxed out at 2630 fps as it didn't speed up any from 69 to 72 gr of powder, some loads just shot better and had a more consistent ES. I'm wanting to switch over to a 275 Accumax. Is there a faster powder out there that I could try to get a few more fps? The shorter bearing surface on the Accumax should give me more speed with 4198 but I wouldn't mind having a shorter powder column as well. This is a hunting rifle so I don't want to duplex charges.

That seems like pretty good speed for 300gr with only a 24" barrel.Maybe check with Richard,he has tried just about everything.

So what does a hunting rifle have to do with not using a duplex? Its not like your in the field loading and shooting all day long?................Just saying? Load it and sit in your stand and take your one shot. If you have done your homework, you should be dragging your deer out of the woods! With two vial taped together the reload time difference is probably less than 5 seconds. You say you have 5" of shank? What is the diameter of that shank...........1.2? 1.250? In any event, you are not going to blow up the gun with the duplex I shoot...........6/65.8 of Clays and H-4198. It may bring your velocity up a bit and improve reliability/accuracy? Two bullets and and second charge is what blows up guns with thin barrels. Fat barrels just bulge a bit. I just got done cutting 3 1/2" off my 29 1/2" brux because I bulged the barrel last week. That gun was shooting an average of 2804 fps with a 300 gr. SST and that duplex. This week I shot the same load and bullet and only lost 60 fps.

Richard do you actually gain much in velosity duplexing ? I understand why you and others duplex . For ignition purposes and obratration

I don't want to see anyone get hurt. FYI, a faster powder will NOT increase velocity compared to a max charge of a slower powder BUT it WILL increase pressure. In other words, a max charge of a powder faster than say 4198 will not increase velocity but will increase pressure. To increase velocity, a slower powder at larger quantities must be used. Be Careful, that is a potential pipe bomb in your hands.
