I'm gonna keep the gun and see what it will do . Shiloh sharps makes their own barrels. C Sharps used Badger but Badger only makes barrels for the military now. If I can't get the gun to shoot like I want I'm gonna have my buddy (Jeff Hankins) put a Krieger barrel on the gun . He just does not know it yet ! Krieger makes BPCR barrels , they are suppose to be the best in this game . Time will tell .

Doug............on your question? I would do the same thing. Polish the leade, J-B the barrel good and go shoot it.

Doug the Shilen barrels I use for all my muzzleloaders are actually a .457 1-20 twist which they say is their BPCR barrel. And they sell a ton of them. Unless you have a lot of experience shooting a black powder cartridge rifle and are good at casting and sizing these bullets you might not get the accuracy you are looking for no matter what barrel you have. These guns can be very touchy to tune even more so than our muzzleloaders. You will also need to deal with the fouling issue so talk to the top shooters in the game. What size groups are you looking to shoot and at what distance. Also will this be shot with open sights or a scope.

I have been reading for months . I realize I have a lot to learn , a whole lot ! I'm hoping to get 1 MOA accuracy . They say you need 1.5 MOA accuracy for silhouettes. My gun has soul long range sights now . I may put a scope on the gun but first gonna see what I can do with the sights I have now . They tell me that scores do not vary that much from scopes to soul sights . I know nothing about this but it's something that looks like fun and I love to compete . They have matches all over . I'm a very competitive person I realize it's gonna take awhile but I'll get there . I also realize that load development is a huge part of this game . This is why I'm so frustrated that this gun did not come with a Badger barrel . From what I have read they are the best . I wanted the best gun I could buy to take that part out of the equation . That way I could just work on my shooting form and load development. I didn't want to worry about if it were myself or the gun . From what I have read Elkman most everyone uses a 18 twist barrel or faster because of the heavier bullets and slower velocities . I'm talking .45/70 and .45/90s . I'm gonna shoot the crap out of this gun before I do anything crazy .

I don't think so . Suppose to be period pending . They want octagon barrels or at least partially. Not many company's do that . Other than that no . They tend to run a little faster twist because in a .45 most are shooting 500 grain plus bullets . 18 twist most common but can't be to fast because you have to shoot lead bullets . Then you have trouble with leading . I'm just stating what I have been reading I really don't know . I guess you can paper patch to help with leading but im not even gonna attempt that .I'm diving in with both feet .Richard and Elkman have forgotten more than I will ever learn .

Your planning on shooting Black powder silhouette. They have shot that for years at Ridgway Rifle Club in Ridgeway, Pa. They usually shoot off of cross sticks. If your eyes are good you should be able to do well with open sights. I shot High power and small bore silhouettes for 30 years. Any live action target sport is fun. And your right most guys use a 500gr bullet so 1-18 should work.

So this barrel is a 1-20 twist GM or a 1-18? GM does not list a 1-18 button rifled barrel on their website. Ive shot upto a 488gr in both a 1-20 GM barrel and a 1-22 Pacnor but nothing even remotely close to long range. That was in MLs also not a Sharps or CF.

I would call GM about the barrel just for grins. Ask them what they supply to C. Sharps because their 1-18 BPCR barrel (on the GM website) is single point cut.

Thanks Jeff that's very helpful . Most would go into something like this with someone that already knows the ropes . Not me I just dive in face first and hope for the best. That read has been very helpful .

Doug, Hope all goes well with the Sharps. To be honest I have looked at them many times myself. I've never been a great open sight shooter and if I ever bought one myself I'd probably go with a period type reproduction scope. I heard years ago after Quigley Down Under was released that the Sharps companies were 3 to 4 years back logged. The history of these rifles is amazing. Congratulations!

Thanks Kyle gonna be a journey ! You guys are the ones that got my obsession started . It all started with Jeff's famous Kentucky Challenge ! I have never shot with a gun in competitive form . It's a whole lot of fun ! I love the way people are eager to help each other. These BPCR matches seem to have the same atmosphere and they have a shoot every month . That will keep me busy between challenges ! My Hankins gun is my true obsession. If any one reading this post has never been to a Kentucky Challenge you really need to try and make the trip . Its not really about the competition more about the camaraderie . It's a experience you will want to repeat !
