The 225gr FTX is also about half the cost of the 200gr FTX. I will chrono the load after the first of the year.

The 225gr FTX is also about half the cost of the 200gr FTX. I will chrono the load after the first of the year. They sure are and it does not make any sense to me. There is a chance the 225gr FTX also uses a softer lead alloy which would cost more. Lead is more expensive than tin and the Hornady jackets are not pure copper. The difference in jacket cost would be tiny compared to the lead cost difference. Ive talked to a guy that swears by the 225gr FTX in a 460S&W carbine. IIRC he is shooting them over 2300fps. I think Omega45 on the other board also used one to take a deer in one of his SMLs. Personally i would be cautious of using them at those speeds for hunting. When i shot them at about 2300fps in my NULA, they were little grenades.

I think I will call Hormandy tomorrow and ask them why. Doesn't make sense to me either!

I think I will call Hormandy tomorrow and ask them why. Doesn't make sense to me either! Let us know what they tell you.I have spoke with them before and they have been very helpful.I have a bullet performance range chart from 2015 of most of the hornady bullets. They sent me a free product guide with the information in it.

I talked to Hornady a little while ago. The guy I spoke with was very knowledgeable about the two bullets in question. He said they make two or threes times as many of the 225gr FTX compared to the 200gr FTX which helps with cost. The 225gr FTX is also much easier to make due to its thinner jacket and since there is less jacket that also helps with the cost. The 200gr FTX is only made for the .460 S&W and the jacket at the base had to be really strong to handle the high pressure of that cartridge.
Great conversation I had with Seth at Hornady. I was impressed!

That's a beauty of a gun. Thanks very much! Bestill did a great job on it.... This was not an economical build but had it sitting in the safe as a .50 cal that I probably was not going to shoot so I had him turn it into something I really wanted.
