Ok, here I am with my first post. I do not know much about smokeless muzzleloading that is obvious but i want to learn and shoot. I just found out there is a Remington 700 Ultimate muzzleloader being sold by remington. Any good/ if not can it be made good? My first inclanation is that one better off getting a 700 action and have jeff work his magic on it? So how good is it and is it worth ANY money, and does it have a future in mass production it seems the Savage ML did not as far as the company felt anyway since they did away with it? Thanks ahead of time.

First of all welcome to the board, and you will learn plenty here. The ultimate muzzleloarder can make a fine smokeless gun just a little pricey for my liking compared to just buying a 700 action and let Jeff build you one. Good luck with whichever you choose to do.

Welcome aboard Steady....Some have bought the "Ultimate" and rebarrel with Jeff's ignition...Jeff just posted a conversion of one recently...There is plenty to learn here, and NO question is too dumb, if you are in doubt, just ask, that's what this place is for....

I have heard that Remington Ultimates can be had for a reasonable price now. Jeff Hankins of Hankins Custom Rifles has done several conversions of these muzzleloaders to smokeless. Give Jeff a call. I think he can steer you in the right direction to buy a Remington Ultimate at a good price.

I think if you add up the price of the parts individually, you will find that the Rem Ultimate price is very fair. Ive seen them sell for under $800 on occasions and around $850 quite often.

They have been showing up at pretty reasonable prices here and there. If you can buy into one at a reasonable price go for it. If you don't mind the slight limitation of running sabots than you may well have all the gun you will ever need right out of the box. At some point if you want to upgrade that is a great platform so it's a win-win.

Buying a ultimate is a good way to go and actually the cheapest way to go smokeless if.............You re-use the stock..... Re-barreling is all that is needed to go smokeless and it can be done a lot faster than a build from scratch.
I can get the Ultimate ML at a pretty good price. Let me know if you want or need one...

As Jeff said, the ultimate is actually a good way to get into the smokeless game. you can use it all but the barrel and the modules that come with it, it has a good action and stock and even the trigger can be made decent..

How much work is involved in using the stock for a .45 smokeless build ? A lot of sanding to get a good fit ?

very little stock mod if any depending on the barrel profile chosen, light or heavy profile, they will both work in both stock offerings the gun comes in.

If you happen to have a sacrificial Rem. 700 then you might come up cheaper! Then go with one of Boyd's stocks. If not, then the Ultimate is a better deal as you already have a good stock. The Ultimate is also a more preferred single shot action. It lends itself to putting in a "third" pillar just forward of the trigger guard. There are many options depending on your budget! And.........Welcome to the board Steady! You will get nothing but good, honest, straight forward answers to your questions here.
