You can buy a 7/16" aluminum rod that will be very close for a 45 cal. 7/16 rod is approx .440 I bought mine at lowes a few years ago but they only had 1/2 and 3/8 the last time I checked

I bought a 4 foot piece of 6061-T6 from onlinemetals.com. Tapered 1 end with a file, then is stuck it in a half inch drill motor to spin it and used 400 grit sandpaper, then 800 grit to polish it. Wiped it down with acetone and go to go.

This is how I have mine set up. The 7/16 rod is the way to go. I turned mine down from 1/2" on the lathe and it fits a little tighter by 7/16 will work fine. The closer the metal to metal fit the better the heat transfer. Make sure you round the bottom so when you wipe the rod down, you get the water off the end. When I first did mine, I had left it sort of flat........when I wiped it, the rag did not get the water off the flat bottom and I got "wet" ignition:(. You can just stick the rod in a cooler with ice or get creative and build a container like the one pictured out of PVC pipe with foam rubber pipe insulation or any other type of insulation. Fill the container with ice and water. Lately I have been using frozen water bottles. The rod will easily slip down between the bottles and the sides. Ice cubes and water will get your rod the coldest. Think of that tub of ice and water at a picnic with those cans of Bud!!!! Ummmmmmmmmmmmm! upload gambar

Any of the big commercial suppliers like MSC.com or McMaster Carr would have that size rod. You could get it in aluminum brass or bronze. Bronze is much denser and would hold more cold but very expensive and not necessary.

If you are not up to the homemade trouble I got my cool rods, one for a 50 and another for 45, from rossman40.

I picked up 3 rods 7/16 at a old hardware store about a hour ago . they were sitting there collecting dust . Guy said they had been there for 10 years . Going to make something similar to what Richard posted to put them in . Thanks Mark
