I got lucky and drew a Colorado ML either sex elk tag. I have a 50 caliber Remington 700mls sitting in the safe so I decided to make a few improvements for the hunt. I really don't want to put too much money into this project because it will be probably given to my guide at the end of the hunt.
Improvements so far: Boltnose conversion with breech plug. Williams peep sight installed but will probably add the twilight aperture, undecided on the apperature size. Trigger backlash set and pull adjusted to 3#. The stock is factory, the barrel is not free floated.
Now to the questions: I've picked up Federal BOR bullets and Hornady FPB bullets. I've also picked up a Thor sizing sample pack and will probably test some .502 300gr bullets. Does anyone have any insight on which may be a better bullet?
I have had good success with Blackhorn 209 powder with my Encore and MGM barrel so I'm planning on going with that powder unless someone has a reason to try something else.
Primer suggestion?
Im sure someone else has gone down this road and can share their experience to shorten the learn curve.
One last thing, I also drew a cow elk tag for Michigan's early season. I will be using my RemPac 45 for that hunt.

My bro is a 777 guy as he has a bh209 unfriendly plug. He shoots the 300 Thor and they perform great on whitetails of any size. Baby bro is a CO resident and he advises that he has only used a 30-30 and H&R 20 ga slug gun for elk and they aren't good at carrying any kind of rib hit away. IF I get an elk draw I'm taking my .58 hawken repro with prb and peep sights and he said that will kill any elk I can hit. Not much help but just what I've gathered. 10

My vote would definitely go for blackhorn powder and federal209A primer. Clean with hoppes9
I would start with 100 gr by volume charge and thor bullets or hornady fbp
I have shot both bullets and i have had better luck with thor. Loading pressure of about20-25 lbs works really well.
Also the hornady ftx .500 pistol bullet with a little knurl to fit will shoot well with a little hotter powder charge. 120 gr by volume

I shot the 300gn Thor in my .50 cal NULA. They shot about 1-1.5 MoA and reasonably flat enough to shoot to 300yds but blow around some in the wind. Tough bullet though.

How consistent are Thor bullets? .501 load with maybe 10# of force. The .502 are much harder to load in a clean bore, ~30# of force. I'm just wondering if a sizing die would help.

I never sized them. They loaded pretty consistently in my gun. You can use a socket to ever so slightly if you want something in between.

Just a question, Does Colorado require an open breech system for muzzleloader season? If so, will the 700ml with the bolt nose conversion meet those regulations?

No,you don't need open ignition. The bolt nose kit is kosher.

You might want to add a Merit Adjustable Hunting Aperature to your Williams Peep Sight. I also recommend the Thor bullets for Terminal Performance on Elk. I always used the .502" diameter 250 with 110 Grs by volume of BH209 and CCI 209M. I don't know why but the CCIs seems to shoot better with the loose skirt of the Thors than the more powerful Fed 209s. Good Luck on your Hunt!
