This morning (7:00) started out humid as all get out but only 74 degrees….cloudy and foggy; couldn’t shoot at 300 until about 8:00. My intentions were to shoot some light weight bullets……….namely the 200 and the 225 FTX. Problem was, I only had 200 gr. bullets sized for the Shilen (which I did not bring) so I went with just the 225’s and a few 300 gr. Pittman’s. Again, this a 27 ½” Brux .45 with 209 ignition. (Win. 209 primers)
Starting out with a clean barrel I loaded the 225 FTX (quite loose) with a veggie wad and the 6/65.8 – Clays/H-4198 duplex. These averaged 2969 for three shots with a 40 fps ES
(first shot on clean barrel somewhat slow which hurt the ES). They grouped OK at just over an inch.
Next I shot the same bullet/load only without the wad. The first one loaded so loose I thought it would almost fall down the barrel so, the next two I put a very slight knurl them. Three shot average was 2953 with a 30 fps ES and again just slightly over an inch group
Thinking these light bullets might like a bigger initial kick, I switched to 10/60..Clays/H-4198. Here the velocity dropped some and the ES also slightly dropped. Accuracy got a little better at .895 for three shots.
Since my groups tended to lean to the right a little, I made a two click adjustment to the left then loaded a 300 gr. Pittman with no wad and the 5/65.8 Clays/H-4198 load. The one shot struck the 100 yard dot slightly left but close enough for government work! With that, I cranked in 3 ¾ MOA…..NOTE: My 8 x 32 NF scope sits some 2.5” above the bore. The first shot hit the 300 yard dot on the right, the second on the left and the third cutting the first shot for .681” three shot group at 2784 fps with a 6 fps ES.
I packed up the muzzle loader and shot my AR!
