Im not gonna tell you EXACTLY what i did to a new CVA Optima . Other than i had to of put a double charge in the barrel . I know i should of marked the ram rod but was developing a load . Anyway i buldged the barrel . Immediately after firing the gun I tore the gun apart . The breech plug came out fine and i can't see any visual damage to the bore but the bore was perfect . The bullet slide down the bore with very consistant pressure . Now right before seating the bullet there is a loose spot . Should i just junk the gun ? Is it stll safe to shoot . The gun was new but they are fairly inexpensive to buy . I have had other guns with loose spots in the bore from factory but this was not the case . I need some opinions on what i should do with the gun . Thanks

I would not shoot it there may be damage that you can't see. The metal has been stressed. Not worth the chance. JMO

A few hundred dollars for a gun aint nothing compared to the hospital bill you or someone else might have if she goes boom. Tomato stake IMO.

I don't know but you may be able to get another barrel for the optima. The action should be fine

Optima barrels are pretty much history. I haven't seen one for a while but what I'd talk to Jeff is if he can cut the lug or locking piece off the bottom of the barrel and tig weld it to a Brux or something. I've seen where others have done that but I'm pretty sure it's a difficult process. If Jeff can do that, that's what I'd do instead of another berrega barrel.

I don't have a barrel, I might be able to recycle the lug and use it on a Brux barrel...
Doug....... Take this one as a learning curve,, and kinda an inexpensive lesson,,, had that been your new Hankins rifle and you double charged it with 78 grains of 4198x2=156 grains of powder you would have cost yourself about $3,000.00 plus or minus a $1,000.00 or so depending on the scope you had on it,,, plus you could have lost your thumb, hand or your life...
When shooting these things you can't be thinking about anything else but shooting the only gun you have on the bench...

I'd recycle the lug and also weld the scope base on a Brux barrel. Maybe put a brake on it if finances allowed

I did it with my very first .45 PN barrel only three shots into its initial testing! Fece'Occurs! And yes, I shot it after it occurred with a pretty high pressure load. Being cheap, I sent it back to PN and had them cut 3" off the breech end and re fit it. It did not totally get rid of the bulge but moved it closer to the BP so I could shoot smooth sized bullets..........at 23" That barrel had well over 2K shots thru it. I am not recommending you do so, but just relating my experience. That barrel would shoot saboted .40 cal. 200 gr. bullets with a N-110/H322 duplex at 3100 fps..........bulge and all! You could not feel it on the outside and I could not tell with my bore scope but you could feel it when pushing down a bullet. You just have to be thinking all the time.

Richard that is exactly the way this this gun is . You cant see the buldge but can definetly feel it while loading. These guns are not that expensive . I'll just chuck it and buy Dad another gun . Your absolutley correct Jeff, im hoping it was a realitivley inexpensive learning lesson that i wont forget ! I'm very thankful that nothing really bad happened . Although that light gun really did kick the sh*t out of me ! Thats what happens when your visiting and not paying attention . Lesson learned .

My velocity was 1800 fps , my pressure with correct load was 22,00 to 24,00p psi . I have done a lot of research on pressures . It was a safe load until double loading powder thats all im gonna say . I shouldnt of done what i was doing and I'm not advocating anything.

Doug it is SO EASY to get distracted at the range with smokeless guns. People are so interested in them . Sometimes they just don't realize how important it is NOT to disturb a person while loading. I have double loaded short loaded ( no powder or no bullet) several times. The witness mark saved me every time. Now when I am loading if someone interrupts me I just hold up a finger and say give me just a minute please. Finish my load sequence and put the gun on the rest unprimed. If it is some time before I shoot it, I check it with a rod. Now a witness mark is as simple for me as a sharpie mark around the ramrod. When I find the right load I just wipe off the old and re mark it. Also I have used a single wrap of red electricians tape ...or black. It is a tough lesson learned but very fortunate nobody was hurt. good luck in what ever direction you take drop

Or a dirty look because of the brake....lol
