That is true Jeff but I think the .308 is running pretty close! Just about like the .22-250 and the .22 BR. When push comes to shove, yeah, you might eek out a few more fps but the BR will generally do about the same will less powder! I have played with both the .30's and the .22's so I kinda know all four fairly well. Actually have the .22 BR up for sale on consignment at my LGS. No places here for ground hogs Besides I still have a .17 MK IV and a .204 Ruger with a Lilja barrel that drives tacks! Sorry.............muzzle loader thread got side tracked by Rambler's quotes!

Hay Richard Jerry and I both ordered some nosler 458 300gr bullets form shooters pro shop. Jerry took one to work and cut it in half and they have tapered jacket that gets really thick toward the bottom of the bullet. We are thinking they might make a fine hunting bullet. He has sized up a bunch of them and is headed to the range this morning. Maybe he will post a report later.

Thanks Bill.........yeah, he gave me a heads up PM. But seriously? If you are hunting under 300 yards or thereabouts? That Barnes 290 TEZ is going to be hard to beat.........at least with a duplex out of my rifle. I am in the process of putting an aluminum tip on the TEZ just for S--ts and Giggles and because all my loading was caught up. Definitely too labor intensive to do more than a few. If it comes out ok, I will post a picture..........Then hopefully shoot it next week!

So here are the results..........I got this idea from Elkman (Carl). He was playing with the 300 SST so I thought I would give it a try on the TEZ. I used the 250 gr. as I treasure the 290's a little more and figured if I was wasting a bullet, I might as well do it to the 250. When you pull the tip, it leave a hole almost .250" in diameter and about .3" deep. I ran a 1/4" drill bit in and it barely removed a crul of copper. The shank of the tip was turned to .254" with two canalures and the tip was somewhat started. I filled the hole in the bullet partially with Marine-Tex and forced the tip in, in the vise.........slowly as it squeezed out the excess epoxy........let set over night and then turned it down to match the contour of the bullet. This increases the weight to .257 gr. The sides of the bullet have approx. 1/2" of bearing surface. The overall length of this bullet is 1.2" Kyle...............NO I am not going to be making these.........Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to labor intensive. I had some free time and Elkman gave me the idea and I just did it? Yes, only ONE. What I am going to do next week is shoot a group at 200 with the unaltered 250 TEZ amd then shoot this one to get an idea of how well the improvement does........elevation wise. I think the reason these Barnes do as well as they do is because of the increased bearing surface. The 290 has .6" of bearing surface. how to capture screenupload pics

Richard, I like this idea of adding the Corbin Tip. Linebauh took some hot core bullets and ran a few test with these and I don't remember what ever happened with his test. When you run these in your lathe to you see how well the tips are spinning, if they are true ot not? One thing I noticed was that some of the tips were wobbly when they were spinning.
Hope to see test results soon with this project, pretty neat!

Chad..........as long as the bullet itself is running true in the lathe, when you turn the point, it will run as true as the bullet itself. If your lathe is not holding the bullet in line, than when you cut the tip, it will be just as crooked as the bullet. Put it this way, if there were no good bullets available and I was doing some high dollar hunt, yes, I would make up enough to complete the hunt. But since we have the likes of Kyle's bullets, I will stick with just pulling the trigger save for an occasional experiment
