Hello everyone,
I’m just getting ready to get into Smokeless Muzzleloading. I’m actually fairly new to muzzleloaders altogether. It started with an uncle of mine giving me an old 50 Cal percussion CVA Hunter from the 80’s-90’s. After that I bought a CVA Accura MR-X, also in 50 Cal, and finally I bought a 45 Cal Paramount HTR. I’ve had a lot fun shooting them at the range over the last 2-3 years, but with the price of Blackhorn 209 shooting up from 48$ for 8oz to 95$ at my local Bass Pro Shops and Sportsman’s warehouses, I figured I had to make a change. I still have 5-6 bottles of Blackhorn, but I switched to IMR White Hots for my Accura and don’t see much of a difference.
The 45 cal CVA Paramount HTR, however, I’ve been thinking for some time of converting it to smokeless, so I found someone willing to do it in a reasonable amount of time, and I sent it in at the end of January. I’m getting a non fluted #17 Heavy Varmint Brux barrel (around 28 inches or so) with a 1:18, and I'm having it Cerakoted, Armor black, and getting a HIS ignition system installed onto it. It's supposed to be finished within a week or so. Apparently the Cerakoting takes 2 weeks to air dry properly. I already have a 45 Cal sizing die and a Lee Challenger Breech lock press.
I’ve also spent quite a bit of money on Smokeless powders that have become nearly impossible to find recently. After checking Ammoseek 2-3 times daily for over a month I found 3 pounds of vihtavuori n120, 5 pounds of Alliant Reloder 7, and I even managed to find someone with IMR 4198 not long ago, so I got 5 pounds of that, and I have close to 100 250 grain Fury star tip 2ps and about the same amount of Arrowhead 300 Grain 45 cal XLD bullets. I'd be interested in trying the Arrowhead NSR 275 or 300 grain bullets.
Sorry about the long post. Long time lurker, just wanted to say Hi to everyone and I’m open to any suggestions to where I should begin at starting out with the charges of the powders I have. Btw I’ve ALWAYS weighed my charges. I know with smokeless that’s even more important than with BP equivalents. I'm really looking forward to starting.
Here's a couple pics of all the powders i've amassed in the last couple months. (except for the Black powder equivalents. I
've had those for a while.
