Have any of you used the sabot and 40 cal bullets in the Scout looking for softer shooting load for the wife and daughters. I have the blue harvesters and 200 gr bullets. What powder charge would work? Thanks in advance

Be aware they don’t recommend shoot sabots threw muzzle brakes!

I gave my Encore 45/70 conversion to my daughter (13 yo and 80#), I load it for her with 50 gr of IMR 4198. I checked the powder chamber and could probably go down another 5 gr but it shoots stupid little groups right now and she is not complaining about the recoil. If your scout has a muzzle brake and the barrel good enough you could try some 250 gr Pittman or Fury bullets but might need a wad with a light powder charge.

What powder charge would work? Thanks in advance I experimented with some Harvester blue crush rib sabots and Fury 250gr bullets when I first bought my CVA Scout. I eventually went another direction, but below are some of my notes when shooting the sabot loads. Best group was with 57gr 4198. This is a pretty mild recoiling load especially if you leave the muzzle brake on. I asked Jeff and he said it was ok to shoot sabots out of the factory radial muzzle brake on the CVA Scout (I shot about 50 rounds with sabots through the factory brake and did not have any problems). I don't think he recommends shooting sabots out of the self-timing muzzle brake he sells. Hope this helps.

When my son first started shooting my scout conversion he was using 18gr bluedot and 195gr Barnes expanders in hlb sabot, about 1750fps (no muzzle brake), almost no recoil and deadly out to at least 150yds. Now he uses same bullet and sabot with 35gr VV N110, still low recoil but a little more punch(about 2100fps). Also shoots .451 Barnes pistol bullets sabotless with no sizing, I put a light knurl on them. The scout seems to shoot just about any combination you throw at it very accurately.

I have also shot the harvester light blue with 195BX, 200 SST and now 225 Fury with 35 grains of N110 with a dry wool wad out of my 10ML pacnor conversion. As stated very low recoil and very accurate. I found I needed a dry wool wad to keep from shredding sabots. I am thinking the speed of this load is closer to 2500FPS based on mine and others experience. 32 grains of N110 I have also used and recoil was very low.

Lightly knurling the bullets helps the bullet not slip in the sabot resulting in less sabot failure. A wad beneath the sabot also helps.

What powder charge would work? Thanks in advance My black blue Scout is set up for the lighter sabot loads. It has the longer DI plug from Hankins. It takes most of the 45-70 chamber out. I have a very small powder chamber. I wanted to shoot the faster powders like N110. I shoot bullets mainly from 180gr to 225gr. I shoot 28 to 38 gr. of N110 with a 180 to 225 gr. bullets in a HLB sabot with a Eastern Maine wool wads.
