I have a cva apex 45-70 with a bore that is .451 at the lands from end to the other. I also just purchased a cva scout 45-70 that is .450 at the lands from one end to the other. Is there any benefit as far as bullet selection from one to the other for a sml conversion ?

My two Apex conversions take Barnes 250 gr TEZ's without sizing, just a knurl. All other bullets for me need sizing so really no advantage. The Apex barrel may be larger in barrel diameter.

I tried 250 and 290gr tez’s in my apex 45-70 barrel and they seem like a perfect fit but then I wouldn’t get a chance to play with my Hankins adjustable sizing die much. I’m just wondering if there is some benefit in a tighter bore ?

It's just a question of "size? Or knurl?" All my Brux barrels are within .0001 to .0002" so die setting remains the same. Factory barrels are not so discriminating!

Have noticed that some CVA V2 scouts are tighter at the muzzle than futher down the barrel, with that being said all that I have dealt with have shot great either way,,,,

Main thing to hope for is bore is consistent muzzle to breech. Everything else will take care of itself.

Keep in mind conversion guns start their life as rifles, most factory rifles have some degree of choke at the muzzle. .001 difference in bore size makes little difference other than the fact of sizing the bullets down more which could possibly distort the bullet? Personally I have not had that issue but given a choice less squeeze on a bullet to size is a better thing.

When I load a 10 mm bullet in a sabot it peels the plastic and forms some groves in it. I did try a full bore bullet from the breech and it seemed to be about the same amount of resistance as the muzzle.

Are most of the high performance 45 caliber sml bullets .451 and above ?

On some CVA V2 when loading at the bore being a tight fit to the bullet I will start the Pittman bullet with a BULLET starter for that tight fit then use as most know my ram rod to set the bullet on the powder charge with the wad,,,,,,,,,, When pushing down the after the few inches the push would be real easy,,,, giving me less squeeze on the bullet.....
