been a turkey hunter for a long time, since 1968. Have many of you hunted turkeys with other than shotguns? I have killed turkeys with several rifles. Not just shot them like out groundhog hunting but called or stalked and shot them. My favorite was a 32-20 marlin lever gun, light and very accurate with those open sights. then my 22 WMR great for stalking. Last couple of years I have used my Encore conversion SML, keep the scope down on 2X and she is great on turkeys. I also have a Tikka OU that is 12 ga over .222 but have only shot turkeys with the 12 barrel. I know some states are shotgun only for turkeys but here in VA it's your choice. I don't bow hunt but how many have taken turkeys with a bow?
As for calls my favorite is my 1968 vintage Lynches box. Next is my wingbone and cowhorn call. then an assortment of box calls.
Hope all have a safe and enjoyable season. 10

ScenariosKentucky is a shotgun only state for turkey hunting except during bow season where you can shoot one with a bow.. I'm not a big turkey hunter but I have shot a few with a shotgun and a few with a bow.. I would like to see an open season in the fall for a few weeks where a rifle was allowed.. I'm my opinion we could stand to thin them down some in my neck of the woods.. 200 turkeys in a 50 acre corn field can clean it pretty fast, not leaving much for the deer to feed on all winter.. I have heard of the state killing them off in numbers but they could control them a little more buy opening a rifle season on them..

I have shot several with a bow during the fall PA season. Not fan of people with rifles in the woods when I'm sitting in a tree with a bow. We have several accidents every year from people taking "sound" shots. Our spring season is shotgun only. Favorite call is a "Top" box call.

Lamar Williams box and boat paddle calls are my favorite turkey calls. I have two box and two boat paddles by Lamar. Have two more box calls that are due to arrive later this year. They're expensive but worth every penny to me. The worst thing is the 18 month wait. Sure wish rifles were allowed for a few weeks like Jeff mentioned ! For now, I use a Benelli Super Vinci, Mathews Monster Wake compound, and Scorpyd crossbow to hunt turkeys with.

I shot one with a double barrel muzzleloading shotgun my grandfather bought when he was 8 years old for .25 cents at a auction. He is turning 98 this year !
