I build precision rifles and stocks but know little about muzzleloaders. I have just booked an elk hunt in colorado and need to build my self a really accurite rifle. I need help from you guys with parts, sights, powers, and bullets. Thanks in advance for your help.

Since you're hunting elk, you're restricted to 50 caliber or larger. No optical sights, no sabots, etc. If you're planning on doing this hunt often, then a build may be the way to go. However if you're only going to do this once or twice, it may make more sense to buy a muzzleloader designed for the task. Here's where I'd start - look hard at the CVA Paramount Colorado model. It comes with Williams peep sights and will be probably the easiest way to get in the game. For powder, use blackhorn 209 (if you can find it, and stomach the price). Projectiles have to be bore diameter so Federal BOR Lock, Thor bullets, or something similar. This should at least get you started. gd

Is the federal Borlock legal with its non discarding sabot built around it In Colorado?

I just want to build the most versatile rifle I can and still be Colorado legal. Right now I'm thinking , Remington short action, Brux 26" 1-20 twist,Hanking ignition system,Williams western sight,LR brake and one of my stocks. BH powder and bullet will depend on testing to 250 yards.Any thing there you dont like? Do you have a preference on bullets that perform well? Build your Colorado dream rifle.

The big problem is very few of us shoot a .50, many have in the past? bullet availability is limited IF it has to be bore diameter without a sabot? I personally don't know the laws but would tend to lean in the direction of the Paramount as has already been mentioned. Several use them as a platform to build SMLs on and I'm sure you could upgrade the barrel and ignition later if you wanted?

^^^^^ Because you're not allowed to use smokeless powder in CO essentially you're just gonna be reinventing the wheel. Not much innovation with the 50 cal for obvious reasons. No reason to go to excess with a build when you can't take advantage of existing technology. Is the federal Borlock legal with its non discarding sabot built around it In Colorado? They advertise as being CO legal, so I'd think it's ok... Apparently the sticking point is plastic between the bullet and the bore. Not an issue if it hangs off the base... gd

I was fighting my sml .50 cal until I tried the fury 285 with the poly disc on base, I'm only pushing them to just under 2000fps but I have found a couple at the base of my berm after shooting other rifles and them being dislodged. On the surface of jacket they had full rifling engagement and still weighed @250g after going through oak logs and dirt mound
