Hankins Custom Rifles Long Range Muzzle Loading Class 2023
Scheduled dates for the class will be. 5/20/23 – 5/21/23
Objective of this class is to teach each student the fundamentals of muzzle loading, from sizing the bullets, loading the rifle, proper set up on the shooting bags, the ability to create a drop chart for any bullet and making those long range shots. I know you didn’t buy a smokeless muzzle loader to just shoot 100 yards, so come join us at the range for some comprehensive training and real-world shooting. I am confident that when you leave this class you will have the knowledge and skill to make those super long-range shots with your smokeless muzzle loader
Registration fee is $400.00 for the class on Saturday, and we will offer a second day follow up class on Sunday for an additional. I would recommend everyone take advantage of the second day, as this is where we will do some serious practicing and real-world shooting and verifying what we learned on Saturday. At the end of the second day, you will have no doubt in your ability to take shots at 450 plus yards and have the knowledge to make those shots in only seconds, not minutes.
This class will be a hands-on shooting experience, where each student will be loading and shooting their rifle to establish true drop data for their set-up. This is not a ballistics class.
To register for this class please call the shop at 859-428-2336. A $100.00 (non-refundable) deposit is required to hold your spot. The remaining fee is due when you arrive at the range. Remember there will only be 9 students at this class.
(non-refundable explained) If you register and for some unforeseen reason comes up and you need to cancel, I will refund your deposit if I can fill your spot. So, if things change on your end call us immediately so we can offer your spot to someone else.
Saturday Class Start time:
The class will start at 8:00 am Saturday morning, please do not arrive at the range any earlier than 7:30 am. The class will end at 5:00 pm Saturday.
Sunday Class Start Time:
Class will start at 9am on Sunday and run till 5:00 pm, or until the last student is confident in their abilities and skill level to ethically take game up to 450 yards.
Itinerary:
Day 1 May 20, 2023
• 8:00 am. We will start with a safety meeting, do a roll call and a quick introduction of each student.
• 8:30 am. There will be a quick introduction on smokeless muzzle loaders, safety precautions, things to look for when loading and shooting these smokeless muzzle loaders and a quick discussion of the design and the advances that have changed the way we now load and shoot these hi-powered smokeless muzzle loaders.
• 9:00 am. A quick question and answers session will be given to any student that has questions for the instructors of this class.
• 9:15 am. An inspection of each student’s rifle will be performed, if anything is found unsatisfactory, we will try to fix the problem before going on to the shooting benches. Such things could be improper scope mounting, loose action bolts, etc. I do not expect to find things wrong with the rifles, but just in case we will be prepared to fix it if needed.
• 9:30 am. Each student will get detailed instructions on how to properly set up their sizing die for the bullets they bring to the shoot. Powders and primers will be discussed, and load recommendations will be given for safe performance of each student’s rifle
• 10:30 am. Each student will be assigned a bench, from which they will shoot their rifles during the class, this class is limited to 9 students, there for each student will have their own bench throughout the entire class.
• 11:00 am. We will start with loading the muzzle loaders and shooting groups at 100 yards. Velocity of each shooters rifle will be measured with a Lab Radar. Each shooter will know the velocity of their bullets before moving to the next targets. Once each shooter has a good zero at 100 yards, we will correctly set the scope for that 100 yard zero and move on to the 200-yard targets. We will be recording the amount of drop in your bullet’s trajectory, so we can make each shooter a drop chart that is field verified. Ballistic apps are nice to get you close, but they do not provide you with the confidence needed to make extreme long rang shots on live game.
• 12:30 pm. We will brake for lunch. Lunch will be provided by Hankins Custom Rifles.
• 1:00 pm. Back to the shooting benches, moving on to the 300-yard targets. We will again record the bullets trajectory for use with the drop chart.
• 2:00 pm. We will move to the 400-yard targets and repeat the same procedures as we did at the other ranges. Once everyone has their drop data, we can then make a drop chart for use during the rest of the class.
• 3;00 pm. Range time will begin where we will start honing and perfecting our loading procedures, and shooting skills, making random shots at targets out to 450 yards. Each student will have the opportunity to ask questions, get help, or continue to shoot targets for the rest of the day.
• 4:45 pm. Debrief and discuss the days lesson, questions, and answers for all students.
• These times are approximate and subject to change as the day progresses.
Day 2 May 21, 2023
• 8:00 am. all meet up at the range. We will have a good home cooked breakfast, served at 8:30 am. Sharp.
• 9:00 am. Range meeting and discuss the days itinerary. Questions and answers can be asked that may have come up during the first day of class.
• 9:30 am. Will be reserved for any shooter needing or wanting more training or range time. If for some reason we/you were unable to correctly establish the drop data needed for your drop chart, we will get that done.
• A cold bore shot can be taken at your preferred distance to further solidify your confidence in your ability to ethically take that monster buck the next time you see him at 400 plus yards.
• Open range time for practice, everyone can work on their shooting form, and grouping. Instructors will be available for guidance if anyone has questions or needs help.
• 11:00 am. We will start our real-world shooting with a series of shooting drills.
• 12:30 pm. Lunch.
• 1:00 pm. We will go back to the benches and continue shooting targets a various known distances out to 450 yards. There will be several shooting opportunities for each student at all ranges.
