Jeff is building a 40 cal Brux barrel ( 24” long) for a light weight rifle. I would like any input on powders for 225 to 250 grain bullets. I have H4198, IMR4198, H322, IMR3031, Benchrest and Varget powders. Not looking for extreme velocities, just an accurate lightweight hunting rifle. Thanks

May want to move it to the 40 cal section.

If you don't have a powder chamber, 4198 works great with 225 or 250. I will try and find my data for this.

I would think Jeff should have load data for a gun that he builds? I had a light weight 40 cal rifle built years ago and here is the load info the builder sent me.
" I finally got a chance to run some numbers for you, good luck and please use a chrony and verify. Let me know if I can be any help along the way!"
200gr bullet 80Gr IMR3031 46kpsi ~3060fps 85gr IMR3031 51kpsi ~3125fps
76gr H4895 47kpsi ~2950fps 80gr H4895 51kpsi ~3040fps
82gr varget 45kpsi ~2926fps 89gr varget 50kpsi ~3055fps
240gr bullets
70gr IMR3031 46kpsi ~2750fps 76gr IMR3031 51kpsi ~2875fps
66gr H4895 46kpsi ~2650fps 70gr H4895 50kpsi ~2740fps
73gr varget 45kpsi ~2660fps 80gr varget 50kpsi ~2800fps
This was using the Hornady SST and Cutting Edge 240 Gr. after playing with different bullets I went with H-4895 and the 253 gr. Pittman/Hammer and the Pittman 250 gr AccuMax

From my notes, 48.5 gr of 4198 with a 225 gr bullet at 2500 fps. Very nice load and accurate at 100 yds. Mild recoil. That was with 209 ignition. 1 inch straight barrel omega build.

If you are going to have a powder chamber, don’t go over 50 grains in size. H4198 will likely be optimized at below 60gs. H322 will likely be best at 60-70g, with 225 -250g bullets. With sized 225/228 AccuMaxes I’m shooting 228 AMs with 62g H322, DI, 2770’/sec. I’ll likely go up some on the powder load.
