I also hate that they do not supply necessary parts. Thank goodness some are available elsewhere. For many shooters they do not shoot enough to have significant wear or wear them out. I would suspect Savage saw enough double loads and bad press on the same that they were happy to see them die on the vine both by not making anymore, no repair parts or factory help or information. It is a shame as for the time they were pretty much the leading edge with smokeless. They could have evolved over time but they could never control loading problems, double loads or the wrong powder or too much etc. I suppose the bad press and potential liability to them was not worth it on the fairly low numbers sold as compared to center fires. It did at least spur other smokeless MLs and for that I am pleased. I still use my Savages, most modified with .45s and have other SMLs and am not really handicapped for the generally under 200 yard shots I shoot. Have done some breechplug modifications out there and the primer pocket idea by sew so generally do not have leakage issues in the .45s and .50s. Are there better designs out there now, of course and if I was starting out new I would adopt them. Just spent the time to get these right so no real need to switch at this time.

I now have quite a bit spent(not invested) on my 10ML2/40. Love it and it’s performance. What common parts, especially bolt, go bad? What can be done, if something does?

Cocking piece sleeve opened up on mine and since I couldn't find one I put a rod inside it and lightly hammered it back. It was letting the cocking pin slide out. I also had to replace a bolt handle and bolt face. I no longer own that rifle.

Speaking for myself I wouldn't give 50 bucks for one now because the way they did their customers. The last time I called about a part the lady said they had no parts and wasn't allowed to even talk about muzzleloaders. That's what irresponsible shooters who will not own up to their own mistakes, unscrupulous trial lawyers, snowed juries, litigation gets us. If Sav CS were to now give someone information about their ML's and something else happened, they could be in court over it all over again. Some of Savages customers became their worst enemies. Some of the parts on the 10MLII are totally interchangeable with their CF's, at least with the Model 12. How many, I am not sure. Such is the AccuTrigger, for one. One can also by-pass the whole trigger system with Rifle Basix Sav-2 made for Sav CF's, which is what I did.

I put a rifle together last year off of a model 12 that I bought just for the action. It was a FV through Cabelas with a $50 rebate from Savage. I filled out the online rebate with attached receipt and all, also mailed all info and never got even an email from them. That was a year ago so I am done with them. They make their parts available only to ffl or gunsmiths so far as my experience has been with them. If I would have had to buy all the components to build the rifle, I already had the ignition system and barrel and trigger, I would have built off of Rem.700.

I have a laminated stocked 10ML2/40 PN, 26”, that has been bedded, third pillar, 1.5# SSS comp trigger. 209 ignition. This gun was made before the 1st 45 PN mod of a 10 ML2. For years I shot knurled 195Barnes, 200 SSTs and 240 (annealed) 40 cal bullets , all knurled. Shot around 3/4-1 MOA. Recently got a Hank’s smooth sizing die and 225 AccuMax bullets. This is what it had been needing! Well sub-MOA, moderately low recoil, 2950’/sec 2 1/4” hi @100, 1 1/2” hi @ 200 and 5 1/2” low @ 300. My barrel should be at the post office this morning, back from Richard, with a Hank’s tactical MB and with my BP bushing modified. Currently cost effective? No, of course not! Virtually all other options are better. But sometimes we can take a previously state of the art gun, that is now very outdated , and recoup some of our “investment “. I think it was worth spending a little more money on this gun to maximize its potential. Next week, it’ll have the new Sightron 3, 6x24 zero return and lighted reticle scope on it; and hopefully , it’ll become sub-1/2 MOA. Steve, when you get done with the Barrel / Breech Plug Facing Tool you should have the "Best" Savage 10 ML-II out there!
