I have a 50 cal. smi barrel 29" 1-32 twist on an encore frame. So far my barrel loads and shoots it's best when it is thoroughly cleaned between every shot. This seems to be the only way I can get the sabot and bullet to consistently load with the same pressure or force as it's loaded. If I load after it has been shot without cleaning, the velocities are very inconsistent. As of now I'm shooting hsb sabots with lukes 310 apb bullets @ 2350fps. It shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards and this evening I shot 3 1/2" group at 300 yards, so I'm happy with the way it shoots but was wondering if I'm missing something here or possibly doing something wrong? I surely can't be the only one cleaning my gun after every shot! Or am I lol???

What powder/powders are you shooting?

I shoot a 10/50 duplex of 5744 and h4198 and federal 209A primers. It seems like a fairly mild load but the velocities I thought were decent.I assume due to the longer barrel I'm shooting. Went with a duplex because I had problems with misfires with h4198 and 250gr bullets last year in cold weather and once it happened I have been leery of shooting a straight load of h4198.

You could try a cleaner burning booster like N110 and maybe even a different duplex like N110/H322. You could also try a different sabot not sure which one you are using. Most guns shoot better on a fouled barrel so not sure why yours doesn't but every gun is different. I don't shoot sabots in my sml guns. Went sabotless and never looked back. Some other guys should respond with more ideas.

How does it shoot match hunters in the same sabot...? Since Lukes is a .458 bullet ,maybe the .451's like it dirty out of your gun...Imo whatever works for you ...Do It....

So far the harvester smooth black has been the most consistent and accurate. They are a little tight and I did notice when I shot a while back and the temps where in the low 30's they where pretty rough to get down. I'm sure they will only get worse as it gets colder. I haven't tried mmp sabots yet so that will be the next thing I try. I'm convinced that sabots are the weak link with smokeless muzzleloading and I will have a sabotless gun for next year!

Sml, I've tried the match hunters once with harvester bcr sabots and without looking at my notes I believe the best I could get was 2 1/2" group. I might give them another try with different sabots. Oh I did notice the harvester bcr sabots were not holding up to my 10/50 duplex load and the 310 apb the other day, the petals where coming off which surprised me because I consider this a fairly mild load.

Different barrel that I had when I had a 50, but looking at my notes, yours is indeed a mild load. My sweet spot was @ 10/57. I did not clean between shots, but with your 1/2" group, I would not change your load or your cleaning routine. Also, I've never considered petals coming off, a sabot failure and I too have seen this happen, even with mild loads.

My NULA would shoot boringly precise groups with BE and MH bullets in Harvester Smooth Short Black over 38-39gn of N110.

Thanks for the education on the sabots and all the good info guys. I still have a lot to learn!

Before going sabotless, my best groups came from a clean barrel as well. Makes "one shot one kill" just that much more important!

Have a 50 cal that I shoot BH 209 with Fed 209a primers. I get my best results when I clean between every shot. I know I'm starting from a consistent point every time that way.

I always start with a slightly fouled barrel when hunting. I also know where my rifle shoots with a clean cold barrel just in case. Not much difference at 100 yards. The deer can't live on the difference.
