In anticipation of receiving my new Hankins SPML I would like to know if the recommended 78 grains of IMR 4198 is a volume or weight measure? If it is volume would the weight measure be 70% or 54.6 grains?

From my understanding you want to weigh all charges of smokeless powder. That being said the 78 grains of 4198 is weighed not volume.

We deal strictly in weight. I throw all my charges with a powder measure, which works on volume, but I adjust the volume to the weight I want.

By weight. Calibrate your scale before each use, whether electric or balance beam and then use a check weight of a known grain weight before weighing charges to ensure your scale is weighing correctly. Also I have found that electronic scales weigh more consistently if plugged in several hours before use. Kyle

Volume is only used with black powder substitutes such as Pyrodex, Blackhorn etc. You need a scale for a smokeless gun.

I have both balance beam and digital scales I like my digital scale better. Send more accurate however I haven't figured out how to use my balance beam quite right yet, I just got it.
With my digital scale I store it with dryer sheets to keep the static electricity out otherwise it causes problems.

I don't have anymore IMR4198 but 78gn by volume of H4198 is 72.9gn by weight.

You can use a volumetric measure like the Redding Match Grade 3BR if you really want to use volume. You will still need to verify weight for calibration. I prefer just to use a RCBS Chargemaster 1500 combo because its simple and fast enough for my needs.

I weigh all of the charges I need for reloading. I just wanted to be sure to know if the suggested 78 grains of IMR 4198 was weight or volume. Weight is good, more precise and I'm used to doing it for all my center-fire reloading. Thanks again for all the good feedback.

I'm pretty sure any time you see a smokeless charge that the standard is, "by weight"; this pertains to metallic or SML. Conversely, any time you are dealing with black or a sub the standard is, "by volume"; again, metallic or ML.

keith, thank you, good to know. Powder measure is sure something for which one doesn't want to make mistakes.
