More good results with IMR-4227
So, last week I shot IMR-4227 with very good results using 60 grains. NO “pressure trace”, but it did not feel near the recoil I get with 72 gr. of N-120 or 75 gr. of H-4198 using 300 gr. bullets so this week I upped the charge to 63 grains.
Weather today was ideal for shooting with temperatures in the 40’s, on and off light rain and no perceivable wind on my flags. To foul the barrel I used some “old” or “original” 300 gr. Fury star tips that were not annealed/or bonded. Experimental bullets Dennis had sent me. The charge was 75.5 gr. of H-4198. Some scope adjustments were made and some “err” readings occurred from a low battery and water on my photo cells but velocity averaged 2975 fps and the ES was 16.
For the next seven groups I used a straight charge of 63 gr. IMR-4227……..NO wads.
Group #2 with the 300 gr. XTP averaged 2848 fps with a 25 fps ES and a .876” five shot group.
#3 with the tipped 300 Fury was in and around 2845 but spilled powder gave one low shot…..still the 3 shot group ¾ moa.
Next, I dialed up 4 ½ moa and shot the same combination at 300 yards. This averaged 2859 fps with a 9 fps ES and a 1.116” group.
For group #5 I substituted the 300 gr. Pittman AeroMax where the velocity averaged 2875 with a 4 fps ES and one of my best 300 yard groups at .467”
Back to 100 yards and the 230 gr. Hornady H.A.P. for an average five shot velocity of 3109 fps with a 14 fps ES and a five shot 1.103” group
#7 was shot with the 250 gr. XTP and averaged 3040 fps with a 19 fps ES and a 1.228” three shot group.
And last, the 250 gr. AccuMax at 3048 fps with a 4 fps ES and a .706” three shot group.
As can be seen, this load seems to favor the heavier bullets. Possibly lowering the charge might produce better results?? I only shoot these lighter bullets to give members an idea of what a particular powder does with various weight bullets. If I was interested in just shooting lighter bullets in the .45 I would work at tailoring loads for that purpose but I know that the best accuracy for the .45 lies in bullets above 275 gr.. Next week I plan on pushing the load up a grain or two and see what the results look like?
