I always liked the 6.5/284 have two right now and I have used a 260 Rem for many years in high power Silhouette matches with great success. Since the advent of some new powders and the ever increasing supply of heavier match grade bullets coming out this has prompted me to get my 6.5/284 match rifle out of the safe and start playing with it again. This is built on a blue printed Rem 700 S/A. with a Laminate target stock Shilen 1-8 twist Ratchet barrel really its a 4 groove canted land barrel 27" long with a brake. This gun has shot very well at 1,000 yards in the past so today I wanted to test the new Hornady 147gr ELD Match to see how they would shoot and check the velocity with RL 16 .I had no trouble running these at 3,000 fps and they shot very well at that speed at 365 yards so I do believe they will shoot at 1K.
This test was to verify accuracy and velocity because my new build is going to be with a Krieger 1-7 twist 30" long barrel to shoot the new 150gr Sierra Matchking with a BC of .713 I shouldn't have any trouble running those at 2950fps or a little higher depending on where the accuracy node comes in this will really make the 6.5/284 a better cartridge than it was before using 140gr bullets because the 284 case was actually bigger than what was really needed to do the job. The 1-7 twist barrel will produce more pressure than the 1-8 twist but the 150gr SMK doesn't have a long bearing surface so it really shouldn't be a problem using RL 16 if it is I can go to a host of other powders but RL 16 is doing extremely well in this gun and in my 300WSM'
Should have the barrel by the end of this week Bruno supply had it in stock so not wait time there. When I get it together I will post some results.
