Sounds like Vortex is the way to go since they replace their defective or broken scopes right away, no questions asked. I have an old Burris XTR on my Savage MLII since 2009 with 4 Farrel rings on a Farrel base that's still going strong. A Redfield rep told me years ago that mounting problems caused the demise of most scopes, like others have mentioned, and I agree.

My next scope was probably going to be a Sightron but not so sure now! I have had zero issues out of my 2 Nightforce. My Zeiss HD5 is holding up well on the .40 but when on 15X I have the side focus maxed out to clear up the target. Have plenty of adjustment left on both Nightforce.

I have a Burris xtr2 4x20x50 on my .45 muzzleloader with a leupold steel picatinny rail and leupold steel 34mm rings. What I've learned about heavy recoil is good one piece base with quality rings is a must(the one piece base will actually make action more rigged against action flex). Also lapping lugs is necessary so plenty of surface area contact is required (it doesn't matter how much torque you use if you don't have bearing surface). Now I'm shooting 310 gr ASG bullets full formed with 95 gr of imr 3031 powder at 2945 fps so there is recoil(I killed a leupold vx-7). I really like this scope for hunting purposes it has zero stop and is clear I understand that that much power isn't necessarily if your not long range hunting but for field use its about right for me. In all when you purchase a scope for these if it won't stand a .50 cal BMG it won't stand for a smokeless muzzleloader. Just my imput on scopes(you can get these for under 1000$).

When I asked the tech at Leupold about the ability of my 16X MK4 to hold up to stiff SML shots he said: Don't worry, these scopes are made to used on the 50 BMG's. So Cornbread............coming up to Kentucky this spring? I do want to get out to Mike's to do some 400 yard shooting prior to the spring shoot.

The story is not over, I was going to call him but I was too mad, sent an email instead. If I have to I will sell them all and move on, I'm not partial to any brand but customer service goes a long way, right now Sightron is on my short list. Its a shame that NightForce is the only?.answer to the SML scope eating blues...You've tested so many under 2k scopes , with failure or bad CS along with Richard....I'm with RR as I have been lucky not killing a leupy vx11 on bigmac 72gns4198/275 be's....

Richard if my schedule allows I have thought about it. It would be a very good learning experience, I'll check outage schedule and see if I can. Richard any time you'd like we will plan it.

I guess I'm lucky...11 years ago when I bought my first Savage ML 11 I put a $200 3x9 Nikon Buckmaster scope on it...The first three years I had it I put over 1000rounds downrange...mostly 300gn bullets going 2400fps...After that I put a 3500 Bushnell and another 4200 Bushnell Elite on a couple more SML's...since then a few Vortex Vipers and a Weaver Super Slam on others...several thousand shots total. One time I had to send one of the Vipers in for not tracking right...they sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with it...My original Buckmaster is on my Scout now...the two Bushnell Elites are still going strong on other SML's.. The two Vipers and the Weaver I still have are currently on my Rem-Bruxs and going strong... I will say that I rarely shoot over 2800fps with 250-275 gn bullets and 2700fps with 300 grainers...I lap all my rings and have only used a one piece mounts once. I'm a hunter and have never felt the need to fork out the big bucks on high dollar scopes...Nothing against them that's just me...Now I have a buddy I helped along set up his first gun...He put a $3500 SB on it...That's him.. Takes all kinds...The old saying is...I'd rather be lucky than good... Zen
