Nice morning……….60* and overcast with no wind!
Last week I had some trigger problems along with getting another scope I put on, adjusted. About eight shots or so wasted on messing around, then re squaring the scope with my target.
All shooting at 100 yards with the Direct Ignition System and CCI LRMP’s This week I was just playing with various loads and bullets but there was a sleeper in my loading box.
The first group was shot with the 300 XTP (one of my favorite economical bullet) and 90 gr. of AA-2015. This came in on the low end of 2900 fps and produced a nice .352” group.
In an attempt to reduce the powder charge but keep up the velocity I next went to a duplex starting with 5 gr. N-110 and 78 gr. 2015 -2831 fps. I then went up to 6/78 and got 2843……..then to 7/78 and hit 2861. These three shot ended up in a .372” group. As I was out of XTP’s I put in a 300 Fury secant ojive bullet and upped the charge to 8/78 with a 2895 fps velocity and this bullet finally went a bit high out of the group. This load will get more testing next week at this setting and with various bullets.
For the third group I went with the three remaining Fury Secant’s I had left and a charge of 75 gr. N-130. Although low in POI and velocity, the two shots printed right next to each other. Since the velocity was right at 2700 I added 10 gr. of N-110 which perked it up to 2894 fps and also raised POI considerably.
In this next group I was using a 300 gr. AeroMax that Doug 36 had given me. He had Kyle make some up with a .012” jacket for his black powder competition but was having accuracy issues. I had tried them a few times with various charges and also struck out. This time I attempted to shoot them with a much reduced load of 63 gr. of H-4198 in the event the thin jacket was getting distorted? The velocity was low at 2572 fps ( I eliminated the first shot due to a powder change) but even with it included the ES was only 11 fps. With it, the four shot ES was on 4 fps. Unfortunately the accuracy was not up to par. Sorry Doug, I tried!
OK, so here is the sleeper! The lowly Hornady 225 FTX. I have been carting these bullets around for well over a year and had not shot them…………I can’t remember when? So, I used a duplex that shot the 300 gr. AccuMax’s in and around 2890 fps. It was 10/62 of N-110 and N-120. I also put a .060 veggie wad under the bullet. The five shot average velocity was 3118 fps with a 23 fps ES and five shot .542” group. After a subsequent zeroing of the 300 AccuMax, I determined that this 225 FTX impacted about 3” higher than the 300 gr. bullet. It seems to me this would be an ideal bullet for the new trend in break open rifles. The charge could be reduced and you would still have a 300 yard light weight hunting rifle with more than enough power for most any antlered critter?
