Bill Travis was the first to test the new Pittman AccuMax .402" 250 grain bullets. The distance from bench to target was 105 yards. This is a pic of the first group of the day with the magnetospeed removed Shot 1 is high, 2,3 and 4 below. This load looks to have promise. I'm very pleased with the initial testing. Jerry Lane will be testing more 250's tomorrow if all goes as planned. Testing of the 225's and 275's will be very soon.

Kyle what brand name of barrel do you recommend to shoot full form with and what twist? You making me want to buy barrels. Bill's barrel is a Rock Creek .401/.408 with a 1 in 13.2" twist. Yes these bullets were shot smooth form! Bill has also shot the Pittman/ Hammer .4085" 297's full formed out of this same barrel with great results. My recommendation at the present time would be to go with a Rock Creek .401/.408 for smooth forming .402" bullets and full forming .4085" bullets. Krieger makes a top quality barrel. My .450/.458 barrel on my Hankins Custom Rifle is a Krieger. Kreiger does offer a .390/.400 which sounds like what you are looking for. If you plan to shoot 275 and 300 grain range bullets, id go with a 1 in 13.2" or 1 in 14". If you plan to mainly shoot lighter bullets in the 250 grain range max, I'd go with a 1 in 16". Take a look at JBM bullet Stability calculator and plug in the values for a bullet you plan to shoot with different twist rates entered. You are looking for a Miller Stability value (SG) of 1.5 or greater.

these bullets will definitely be shooters, they were in the 2950 FPS range which would turn Mr. buck into jelly legs in a hurry. I really look forward to testing both lines of bullets on meat, I think both will be winners.

the total group was .772, the last 3 were .250, not bad for a starting load from a break gun, the bullets will shoot much better than the shooter.

No doubt they will shoot...............that would kind of be like hunting deer with a 30/378 Weatherby! But then 300 gr. ,45 Pittmans at 2900 is even worse!

Impressive indeed! I'm kinda wishing I hadn't just built a 45 caliber gun and had gone with a 40 instead. The only feasible solution I see is to just have another SML!

My brain tells me I never have enough, will it ever end? likely when I go broke or the wife kills me.
there are more .40s in the works that I know about, I should have another done shortly on a PTG short action with another 13.2 Rock Creek, it will wear an AG composites Carbon Fiber stock and Trigger Tech trigger, while it will be no heavy weight I'm hoping it will be a little more shoulder friendly than the Apex. there are other builds on the horizon that I know about as well.
good bullets have opened a new door for the .40, while a few guys have been shooting them for years there were just not enough bullet offerings to make it attractive to the masses, that has all changed now..

I just with they were legal to hunt elk with here in New Mexico. Oh well I will have to stick with my .45 cal guns. Might have to build a deer/pronghorn gun though.

What load are you using for the testing? I have a .40 Apex with .392/400 barrel and was curious.

was using Varget, hate to disclose the grain weight but will in a PM if you want. I hate to just throw a load out there that has not been traced and thoroughly tested. I deemed it safe in my gun but don't want to stick my neck out to say it will be safe in all guns, I know several guys have 1" encore barrels in .40 with holes drilled and tapped for bases, safe in them? it would make me nervous.

My barrel is a Shilen .392/400 1-16 twist. I have 1 on a Rem M/L and 1 on the Apex.
