I have a CVA hunter 45/70 conversion with the H.I.S system that I believe was don by Jeff. I bought the this from another member on another message board. The inside of the Breech plug has a locking hollow allen screw inside the plug that is down inside of the plug. I can see the threads that go down inside the plug to the locking ring. The bushing is wearing out and I want to replace it. The locking ring is stuck and I dont want to force it with out stripping it. looking for ideals of getting it out. Thanks

You will most likely never get it out................ Guys the remove the locking ring and clean the plug after each range session can get them out because they never let the carbon build up to the point of no return.. Once you have let it stand in there after many shots it is almost impossible to get it out. A new plug with bushing is then the answer.
Why do you think the bushing is wore out? How big is the flash hole?

Soak it in CLR and then in Kroil oil Or 50/50 Kroil/acetone. Let it soak, covered so the acetone won't all evaporate, 24-48 hours. Then, if needed, apply heat. Repeat if necessary....patience is your friend.

Get yourself a flat punch in a size that just fits inside the plug. You want it to seat flush with the face of that hollow set screw Set the plug on a hard surface (I use the flat anvil part of my bench vise). Keeping the plug vertical and square to the surface, give the punch a sharp blow with a hammer. You don't want the plug to tilt or be off center........you want the blow directed squarely on that set screw. This will tend to break the bond with the carbon. Then, apply heat with a benz-O-matic or similar torch (oxy/acetylene if you have one). Heat will not hurt these plugs. Then with a good quality Allen key you should be able to break it loose. Once the screw is out, get 10x32 bolt or similar thickness piece of nail or whatever and insert it from the primer end............just long enough to stick out about 1/4" or so. Now put the plug in a vise and force the bolt up against the bushing to break it loose. I have taken many out this way. Unless, as Hank said, you take the screw out after each range session and anti-seize it, they are a bugger to remove...........just don't strip that set screw or you will need someone with a lathe and experience to remove it.

Thank you all for your help. I will try your ideals and let you know how i make out. I don't think the bushing is wore out at this time but like to know that if it happens i can just get another bushing from Jeff and replace it. (Cheaper then buying a whole new plug). If I can't get it out i will probably replace the plug. Again thank you for all response.
