No photographs of the targets this session as they were too confusing to try to lay out and there were a lot of scope adjustments intermingled with groups. I will try to give a brief synopsis. This is all DIS; no wads and basically three bullets with two loads: A 10/62 –N-110/N-120 duplex and 73 gr. of N-120 single. The bullets are all 300 gr. Pittman AccuMax & AeroMax along with the Fury bonded star tip. The weather was 72* with a fair amount of rain………………which caused some bad readings on the chronograph when too much water collected on the photo cells. (Waiting for an equipment failure before getting a LABRADAR!)
Fouled the barrel with the Fury’s and duplex load with an average speed of 2885, a 20 fps ES and a .960” five shot group. First shot on the clean barrel somewhat slow and opened the group.
Second group with the Fury and the N-120 single for an average of 2884 and a 39 fps ES. This load produced almost an identical group and identical velocity, just a higher ES.
Group #3 was the single N-120 with the 300 AccuMax at an average of 2866 with a 13 fps ES and a .222” three shot 100 yard group.
Next, moved the same load to 200 with a 1 ¼ MOA adjustment and wound up chasing the bullet all over……..making scope adjustments after each shot. Seemed like it might have needed a shot to settle it down and I rushed and made an adjustment I should not have?
For group #5 I stayed with the AccuMax but switched to the duplex and shot a .575” three shot group at 200. Rain causing inconsistent chronograph reading or no readings at all.
Group #6 was shot at 300 with the AeroMax and the duplex @ 3 ¼ MOA. First shot looked good……..then the next three formed a 1.450” group a bit higher and to the right when shot 5 moved out a tad further right!
So, wanting to check the scope for repeatability, I adjusted back down to zero and proceeded to shoot a group at 100 with the Aero and single N-120 load. First two shots were about 1 ½” high and to the right of POA but in the same hole?................Shot #3 went down and just a tad right of my POA? (scope settling in??) So, for the heck of it I loaded a new Fury bullet Dennis sent me. Basically a star tip but with a secant ojive. Low and behold, that bullet went right in the hole of the last AeroMax.
Finally, I adjusted the scope back up 3 ¼ MOA to shoot a group at 300 with the AccuMax and the single N-120 load. It formed a decent 1.835” group but to the right (as generally usual?) (rain causing chrono reading to be our of sorts). For my last shot I used the tip of the right horizontal crosshair to move the shot over. It did that, but it also shot a wee bit high.
One day I might get these muzzle loaders figured out? So now the question is: Do I shot the duplex or the single load? Accu or AeroMax? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
