I have been having a terrible time the last few days with my accuracy . I was shooting really good then things went to crap for some reason . I have been beating myself up trying to figure out what the heck is going on . When i lost my accuracy i noticed i had a tight spot in the end of my barrel. I thought it was fouling build up . I wire brushed and cleaned the heck out of it. I even JB cleaned the bore .
Tonite i decided to push a bullet through the bore trying to make sure i get the proper fit . I again noticed the tight spot . This time i looked at My bullet . The bullet has a gouge in it . Something in my barrel is tearing the bullet up. I would think that has to effect accuracy ? Im gonna try to lap the barrel with JB paste but im afraid its gonna take more than that . Probably a stupid question but will this affect my accuracy ?

I would soak it with some copper killer a few times, running a snug brush thru between soakings. You could have some copper fouling. My 30 got a little snug spot recently and I used the previously described method to remove the fouling.

If you have a spot in your barrel it will definately affect they way it shoots, Is it right at the crown?

Doug give it a good cleaning with any of the good cooper and carbon removers. It may actually be carbon deposits more than copper build up. You will not hurt your barrel using JB paste. JB is only 1200 grit I have used lapping compounds down to 600 grit and the only thing 600 did was it removed carbon a little quicker than 1200 grit. I bore scope all my barrels to look for any damage. Our top benchrest shooters really attack their barrels with cleaning solvents and then JB every time they shoot just 20 shots. You can do more harm to the bore with your ram rod then you ever will with JB.
One thing that came up from Tom Post at Swing-Loc he had several people ruin their barrels and their sizing die knurling bullets using files to knurl the bullet and then pass them back through the sizing die. I have a friend of mine who hurt his die doing just that his barrel seems ok. So be careful about knurling bullets the metal from the files gets embedded into the jacket of the bullet and can hurt your barrel and die.

Doug I also forgot to ask how clean is your breech plug and what is the size of your bushing in the plug. Did you bushing crack or enlarge to the point that your accuracy fell off that quick.

If the bullet has a gouge on it after pushing it throught the bore it sounds like damage inside the barrel? Can you tell exactly where the spot is? If you could find someone with a bore scope they could see exactly where the problem is?
Next question is what would have caused it?

So be careful about knurling bullets the metal from the files gets embedded into the jacket of the bullet and can hurt your barrel and die. When talking to Tom, thought I was the only one. Perhaps I was his first. He was good enough to rebuild the FF die for another barrel. Really hurts when a 1/2MOA Brux barrel is ruined! For your sake, I hope that is not your problem, Doug. Advice to all: If you are knurling bullets for naked bullets to fit your bore, get yourself a knurling wheel setup of some sort. The only safe way to use files for knurling is for getting saboted bullets to fit or grab better within the sabot. If a person wants to full form .451-.452 bullets (the majority offered out there) get .451 barrels and FF size.

If you have done everything described about (cleaning and polishing wise) and the problem still exists, here is what I would do? Take one of you cleaning rods or get a piece of 3/8" aluminum, brass or bronze rod and square one end off. Leaving a flat surface with a sharp edge. Carefully run the rod in until you can physically feel the obstruction IF it is on the land. If its in the grove, my suggestion will not work. So, if you can feel it, the take and put a tape mark on the rod in relation to the muzzle. (You want to know exactly were the obstruction is). Now take a small piece of maybe 400 to 600 grit wet-O-dry sand paper and contact cement maybe a one inch piece to the rod. Knowing where this obstruction is, by the tape mark, go in a little further and with some side pressure, move the rod in and out a few times. Hopefully, you can feel what is going on and can sand the obstruction out? This is no guarantee, but if it can save a barrel from being trashed, its worth a try? Fire lapping would be another suggestion but it gets tricky since the bullet must go in from the breech, then add powder, BP and fire.
