Just ordered a black on black CVA Hunter in 35 Whelen. After sawing off a drop for a ff die, it will have a 23" bbl. Perfect deer stand sml. It will sport a Hankins style break open Direct Ignition plug and a powder chamber of the same volume as a 35 Whelen cartridge. Looks like a 200gr tsx or ttsx annealed and full formed will be some deer medicine. Will post more as it progresses. Addicted.

In all honesty, I have shot the 30 cal quite a bit, and enjoy it more than I expected. That said, I was testing something new on my Brux 45 , that I haven't shot in quite some time, and I quickly realized that I don't miss the recoil of the 45.
36 cal is legal here in TN for deer. The bullet measures .358 so i consider it legal.

My 35 whelen apex conversion shoots very good and the barrel comes in a little longer than 23". I has 209 ignition but does well with 3031 and 4895 and the 200 ttsx or 200 hornady soft point. The 180 ttsx flat base shot okay too.
Oh yeah, I haven't had to anneal any of the barnes to get them to shoot but you have to grunt some to get them through the die.

I plan to machine the drop for the die right on the barrel in order to keep as much barrel as possible. It will likely still be 24 to 24.25 Inches long. My plan is to shoot the 200gr TSX annealed and full formed with Direct Ignition. It will have a 60gr powder chamber which will remove the original throat. This is primarily for hunting.

I think jonny wadd bought a barrel and was selling drops. Mine is a hunter so I'm not sure the rifling is the same as an Apex. Hammer and I both have identical Krieger 30's but there is a minor difference that doesn't allow me to full form bullets for my barrel with his die. After that experience, I will stick to a piece of my barrel that I know works.

Without a doubt you know more than me but 60 grains powder chamber sounds on the large side unless you are planning a slower powder than 3031. 52-54 grains of 3031 is where I've been at with the 200 grainers.

Agreed. However, I don't want to cut myself short so I plan on a 60gr chamber and I will make extra plugs that take up more chamber volume in order to reduce the charge. In the sub cals, I do not load on the powder anymore. I make sure my case fill value is greater than 92% but never greater than 100%. I have only tested this with DI so I doubt it will work with a bushing. Top end loads in the 45 kpsi range are 200gr bullet with 59.5gr RL15, 58gr Varget, 58gr imr4895, 59gr imr8208 xbr

Watching with extreme interest as I've been very curious about the .358 diam. my 35 whelan with factory Hornady Superfomance 200 grn SP runs at 3020 out of the chrono . just not sure how freindly direct ignition is for hunting situations?

Fastest I've pushed the 200 TTSX with 54 grains of 3031 was a little over 2700 fps. Looking forward to Scat tracing a few loads.

The conversion is complete. Chamber capacity is 57gr of Varget. Plan is to start off at 55gr of Varget with a 200gr sst or 200gr barnes. Tomorrow is the day, weather permitting.

I only took 55gr charges of Varget so no tuning was performed. No.velocities as my Magnetospeed has become a battery eater. Velocity should be 2600ish. The barnes were annealed. I predict that this gun will inflict carnage this season. Attachments:
