high gloss and strong = auto clear, some are very expensive, some not so.

You will need spray equipment to apply them or have a body shop do it?.... But, they would be your best bet for a clear, glossy, hard finish. My local auto paint store sells a small quart package with the necessary clear coat, hardener and reducer for around $60.00. Anything that comes in one spray can will NOT give the the results you want! Even if it says: EPOXY! Needs to be a two part deal mixed at the time of application!

at least 4 but it all depends how much of a show piece you want, you can make it look like glass if you take enough time

And that would be letting each coat cure a day or so and sanding in between the coats!

Well Richard unlike your shooting, this is not totally accurate. They do make a 2-part epoxy clear coat that comes in a rattle can. Amazon sells it for $20. I have used it on car hoods to fix rock dings and it works well. Once mixed you have to use all of the can in about 15 minutes. Once it cures it is hard, sandable, and you can polish it to a very high gloss finish. Of course good painting technique is necessary to keep the cover even but it can be done. You should wear protective equipment (gloves/respirator/etc) while using this product.

Thank you AJ! I had been a auto painter from way back and this is the first time I have seen a rattle can in REAL epoxy! I understand the principal and apparently they have inserted the catalyst inside the can and it must break or open up upon shaking. But there again, it is a TWO part deal as I had indicated. Hey, new stuff comes out all the time. Thanks for sharing. I will be looking into that in the future. According to the below Amazon add, it is only $9.50 and has a 48 hour pot life! No problem guys. I am using the matte finish over my camo finishes on hunting guns. It is good stuff.
