After a somewhat dismal outing late Sunday afternoon (1 1/2 inch 4 shot group shooting 300gr XTPs 95gr 3031) I decided to switch things up and try a different powder. It is worth noting that the bullets were too tight as it took 2 hands and a lot of force to get them down the barrel.
I talked to Richard and decided to clean my breach plug since my bolt was somewhat hard to close and I had a few primers to bulge. I soaked the plug in cleaner over night and then cleaned with the appropriate bit. This resolved the issue.
I decided to go with 73gr of 4198 since that seems to be a lot of guys go to load. I really was not expecting much since this was my first time using this powder.
After setting the Labradar up, the first shot was high of point of aim from the 3031 zero with the velocity of 2779. The second shot went to the right with a 2808 fps. The the third and fourth shots went into the same hole with 2815 and 2791 velocities. At this point I am wondering if this is a fluke or maybe the barrel and plug are beginning to settle in from the cleaning and new powder.
It was getting close to dark but I wanted to see so I rushed three more shots. They all went into the same ragged hole with velocities of 2803, 2791, and 2793. The hole measured about.602, making the 5 shots appx .15. I just bought a 6mm BR and the best I have gotten out of it so far is In the .2s.
Seems like this load is going to settle in around 2790 + or - fps. The recoil is cream puff and if the accuracy holds up, it's a wee bit more accurate than the 3031. I adjusted my Jewell trigger down from 2.5 lbs to 12 ounces. Much easier to shoot small with the lighter trigger although the heavier weight was manageable because the trigger breaks so clean.
I ran a couple of dry patches through the barrel and would say that it seems like the 4198 burns cleaner. However, I wonder about that since I saw a little dusting on the brake which was not happening with the 3031. All and all, the 4198 shows promise.
