A friend of mine is wanting to get into the sml world and doesn't have alot of money to devote to it. I have seen the CVA Scout and Hunter in 45-70 in the $250 to $350 price range. What do you guys think about these guns for conversion? Also what do you guys think about the models with the brake?
Thanks Buddy

I know the scout with break has been done and I believe also the hunter. Look back through the smokeless posts/threads I think 4&5 have the cva scout. I have an apex and really like it, most of the cva's have decent triggers. Your friend would be happy with either IMO.

I personally would go with the hunter just bc it's $100 dollars cheaper and the barrel is 3 inches longer than the scout.

Earlier model Scouts also had the longer barrel and no brake but they might be hard to find now. IIRC last year was the first model year for a Scout 45/70 with a brake.

The New Scout V2 with muzzle brake and the hunter in 45-70 are both 25" barrels.

The New Scout V2 with muzzle brake and the hunter in 45-70 are both 25" barrels. You may want to research that. Last i heard it was 25" WITH the muzzle brake. So not over 23" of actual barrel..more like 22" www.cva.com/CVA-Store-View.php?id=849

I have 2 of the 45/70 Scout V2 with muzzle brake on them and a friend has one also.
The barrel is 25 inches on all 3
Muzzle brake on 2 of them measures 2 and 5/16 inches long.
other one is 2 and 3/8's inches long.
All 3 are great tree stand or blind guns.
all 3 under 1 inch at 100 yards with 59 gr of 4198 or duplex load of 7/60, 4759/3031, Under 2 inch at 200 yards.
Bullets 250 FTX's or Parker 250/275 BE'S or 270 E MAX

IMO it is a bad idea hunting with a brake. Loading is cumbersome. Just like my Mossy 835 turkey gun with 3.5" shells. Just be a man and absorb the recoil. You won't even notice it for the buck fever.

+1. My Hunter isn't bad in the recoil department.

One of them I use the modules set up, with the 275 or 270 E MAX, no wads, the other 2 guns wool wads with the 209 primer set up.
