More Fury results…….
So, I got a chance to play with the few new Fury bullets Dennis sent me; the ones with the softer, thinner jackets.
Good conditions at the range but hot and humid…………..starting out at 75* this a.m. and going up almost 90 by mid morning. Direct ignition system.
Started out fouling the barrel with a couple of shots at some clay birds then on to the 300 gr. XTP with a new duplex load……….at least for the DIS: 10/60 of N-110 and H-4198. Note: No wad used today at all; all primers were CCI LRMP.
Fired the first shot which landed 3” below my POA @2774 fps. Shot #2 came off at 2780 but no sign of it? Hmmmm? Shot #3 registered 2781 and just slightly made the first hole a bit elongated? Based on how well the second shot broke and how good the hold was, I have to assume it went exactly in the same hole. ES for three shots was only 6.8 fps. So, a .163” three shot group.
Moving on to the 300 grain Fury and the same load, my average velocity was 2974 fps with a 7 fps ES. I am thinking the Fury may have sealed a bit better than the XTP and hence the velocity increase? Any way, a .172” three shot group! That reassured me the second bullet in group one was in fact, in the same hole. This load shoots!
Next up was the 335 gr. Fury which I tried with the same duplex and only fired two shots (1.650” apart)………2689 and 2693 fps respectively.
For group 4, I put 93 gr. of 3031 behind the 335 Fury . Results no where near as good. See sheet and target.
Now for the 350 Fury with the same 93 gr. of 3031 and again the results not like the 300.
I spoke with Dennis when I got home from the range and he felt that the problem is likely the balance of the bullet with too much lead forward. He is going to work on lengthening the jacket so the lead sits closer to the bullets base and only has a “hollow point!”—No exposed lead. He is going to make some up and send me a sampling.
Prior to moving out to 300 yards I zeroed the 300 Fury with the 10/60 load and re set the scope…………..then added 6 MOA of elevation. I used the large bull on the Pittman target so I would be sure to capture the group. The first shot did not register on the chronograph but was a few inches high and right. Second shot a couple of inches higher and right……..Hmmmmm? OK, third shot in the same ballpark as #2 as was #4. Now I am completely out of all my 300 gr. Fury’s. I gave Herman three for him to try and only had 11 to start with. My theory as to why #1 landed out of the group? I did several adjustments on Sightron prior to that shot and just maybe, it needed a shot to settle the erector tube? The three shots that were captured averaged 2808 fps and had a low 8 fps ES just like the groups fired at 100 yards. So any naysayers who think DUPLEX loads are a waste of time?................FORGETABOUTIT ! That three shot group went 1.5”
My last group was with the 300 Pittman AeroMax bullets and the same duplex. Prior to the group, I shot a couple of AccuMax’s at 100 and re zeroed the scope……..the fired one to settle the crosshairs.
At 300 I lucked out with the proper scope setting of 4 MOA and “pin wheeled” the first shot. #2 landed pretty close also. #3 seemed to load a bit harder and moved up a bit but still gave me a 1.590” group. And there you have it!
While I only shot the 350’s at 2800 fps, I could feel the recoil, even in the sled. Not a problem, but don’t feel the need to shoot these heavy bullets at the ranges I have available.
