I Got a chance to do a little test with Blue Thunder and IMR 3031 with the 300gr Aeromax and the 325gr Aeromax. This gun likes the 325gr better with the powder charge I used today with both bullets. I tested the 300gr twice because the first bench I setup on was so wobbly I had to move to another bench. I thought that they would shoot better put both groups with the 300gr Aeromax had vertical stringing with IMR 3031 they didn't with IMR 4198.
The 325gr three shot group should have been in the O'S again but these big bullets tear up the paper target and it tore out the center black dot . Still .202 ain't bad
The velocity for the 300gr was 2946fps average and the 325 was 2896fps I didn't gain any speed over my shorter barreled test gun I really didn't think I would but the big difference is I now have a 1-18 twist barrel compared to a 1-22 this will be a big help when shooting the 325gr out to 1,000 yards I hope to do the big test next week if conditions are right. Also IMR 3031 seem to burn cleaner in this barrel then it did in my Shilen barrels but it is also a big bore diameter which my account for that.

Good shooting Carl! The 1 in 18 twist should definitely help. What rear bag is that in the picture? Model#?

Hi Kyle that rear bag is called a doctor bag from Protektor it has the slick silver fabric on the ears they make them for different width rear stocks. It filled with heavy sand its a large bag 4 1/4" high about 8" long very stable bag the bottom is also reinforced with extra leather a lot of the 1K light shooters use this bag with my light gun rest I build.
When I get the 325grs this week I will post the good the bad and the ugly what ever happens at 1K. Our weather has been pure crap lately so I want good conditions to do this test. Also I want to test my heavy bench gun I made a new barrel tuner for it and I got to get that dialed in before next match.

What is your pressure estimate for that load? It should be up there.

This load of IMR 3031 has been trace tested several times. Every barrel and ignition system will produce slightly different results I believe it be around 58k on the high end with the 325gr bullet. I use a 209 ignition system and I can measure my primer for expansion just ahead of the rim and check for any signs of leakage between the primer cup and the holder they come out very clean and have not had any expansion on the primer shell. Also the barrel is 1.250 straight no taper. I did not post the load because there are to many different barrels and ignition systems being used. I have shot the same load in my Douglas and Shilen barrel guns which all have plenty of barrel steel ahead of the breech plug to handle this load. It is not a load for a Sendero taper barrel or any small shank Savage barrel or any break action gun.

I have been hesitant to try 3031 only because of recoil. The H322 shoots extremely well for me. I have noticed that these bullets liked to be pushed. I guess I'll dust off that bottle and see.
To anyone:
For the record...I know what the load is and I know what my rifle is capable of taking. Thanks in advance for your concern.

Scat I have gone higher with IMR 3031 but the sweet spot for this barrel is 96grs. I thought about going to IMR or H4350 but burning up t0 140grs doesn't seem like my best choice I know it will give me more velocity put powder fouling could be a problem with this barrel I have. Hey 2900fps with a 325gr will get me on at 1K with about 32.5 MOA up that's not bad for a big flat base bullet. It will hit go below 1300fps which might be a problem if it is then I will probably try 4350 and see what happens.

I don't understand why the jump from 3031 to 4350? That seems like a huge leap in powders. Why not try 4064, 4320, RL-15, or others in between the two burn rates?

There are a lot of powders in between 3031 and 4350. Such as 4895, 4065, RL15, along with several good ball powders. Kyle donated a pound of 8208 XBR that I plan to try. Ball powders include 335, Winchester 745, CFE223 (which I have and will try), and others. When I get a chance to experiment, I plan to try powders that I have such as 4895, 8208 xbr, RL16, Win 748, CFE 223, RL17, RL22, H4831, Superformance, 7828 SSC. Have done some testing with Varget and looks good.
