Hey guys I got my 45-70 conversion back from Jeff and iv shot it and I'm tickled pink with it. Shooting 1/2" groups with 57 grains 4198 and 275 be's. I got some of kyles 275s but I gotta get me a sizing die b4 I can try them. So iv gathered that u pretty much treat a sml barrel like u would any other center fire rifle as far as cleaning. But iv not found a whole lot about the breech plug cleaning and maintenance on here. I'm sure it's been talked about I just haven't found it lol so do you take the screw and bushing out to clean? If so when reassembling how tight does the set screw need to be? And also iv shot it 10 times an wen taking it apart there was powder residue in the bottom half of the barrel prolly 3 inches down the barrel similar to how a smoke pole would be. I'm sure it is. I cleaned it well before sending to Jeff but didn't clean it after. Could be that. Sorry if these are dumb questions guys iv just never owned one lol. Thanks an any other wisdom u would like to share I would appreciate it. I'm sure I'll need it someday lol

After some 30 to 40 shots I remove the BP, unscrew the screw and re anti seize both and replace. Leave the bushing alone.......it will probably last 1K shots with your loads. I use a patch over a .38 brass brush and run it in with some solvent once or twice and patch dry (do this when the plug is out). That is it! Actually that 3" or so of crud will not bother anything since your bullet does not go in that far.

Or certain inch pounds to torque?
