Like a kid in a candy store I couldn't wait to shoot this thing so I ran out and did just that. I used 300gr Hornady ftx to get sighted in. This gun was not built to shoot Hornady bullets because they lack the BC I need to get to 1,000 yards.
After sight in I tested the 300gr Pittman Aeromax with standard load of 73grs of IMR 4198 a wool wad and a Fed 209A primer the bullets were sized for a loose fit. This is the first 3 shot group which shot really good .256CC and I know it will shot smaller than that.
The far right group is a real dandy it was shot using the 325gr Aeromax with the same power. wad and primer as the 300gr bullet. That group measures .030CC now that is small. These are the very first groups out of this new gun it will get better!
My next test will be with IMR 3031 and 10X I want to get the speed up close to 2900 or maybe a hair above with the 325gr bullet I know I can get the 300gr bullet there pretty easy. I will post more when I test again.

So, do you have a "moving backer" to verify that group or is it a ONE shot group? Good shooting Carl!

Nope no moving backer. That is 3 shots. It is not a perfect 45Caliber hole but it is getting pretty darn close. Very happy with the first round results. I do believe the 300gr will shoot just as small I just happen to have better control on those three shots. Our benches really suck they say there going to replace them this fall man that will be so nice to shoot of a rock solid bench like the ones at the 1,000 yard range.

Very impressive Carl! I hope you have good conditions when you stretch it out at long range.

Kyle I plan on shooting in the late evening at our 1K range usually around 7:30PM it lays down pretty nice If conditions are not really nice it will be a waste of time. Maybe your big 350gr might shoot good out of this barrel put then it would be a trade off for velocity vs BC so I think the 325gr will probably be my choice if they shoot good with IMR 3031 or 10X
Let me know what you have in stock I heard you were out of the 300gr Aero.
Kyle I got these 325gr bullets off a friend of mine who couldn't get them to shoot out of his Brux barrel at all. I called him up and asked him if he had anymore junk bullets that he couldn't make shoot since I just popped off a .030 group.
Kyle keep up the good work on the bullet making department these are really nice bullets.

Hey Richard I am glad you didn't bust me for not having a ramrod on the gun. The picture shows just how worn out our benches are. This is probably one of the better benches on the range they look heavy but they all wobble and move with very little arm pressure on the bench. But when your a World class shooter you don't let minor things bother you lol.
For those that might think 1,000 yard benchrest is easy. We just held a heavy gun match on Sunday and in the shoot off for group there were 8 shooters in that shoot off and all 8 are the best in the country only ( One Shooter) keep 10 shots on the record target everyone else missed the whole target completely that shows you how quick conditions change at our 1,000 yard.

Thats some excellent shooting Carl, in a 209 gun with 3031 and a 325 it will take 93-94 grains to get you to 2900 depending on barrel length. the 325 Aeromax is a great bullet, if I can shoot them reasonably accurately without a doubt you will get the job done if anyone can.

Elkman why did you say that this gun your 1-18 twist is not made for the FTX bullets ? I realize you need the faster twist to stabilize Kyles bullets do you think the 1-18 twist is spinning the FTX bullets to fast ?

Doug I built this gun with one goal and that is to shoot groups at 1,000 yards. I really like the H 300grFTX or SST bullet but it lacks the BC to get the job. They will shoot really good in a 1-18 twist barrel but they drop way to much. It is going to take some doing to get the 300gr or 325gr Aero to shoot accurately at 1K. I am not interested in just hitting the target I want to see what a ML will do with good equipment and good bullets will do at that long distance.
I plan on shooting 96grs of IMR 3031 I have shot that load in 3 guns with different make barrels and they all shot 96grs very well so that will be my next test.
like said before I see no reason to go to another ignition system this 209 system works flawlessly and the price of a 209 primer is dirt cheap and readily avaible just about anywhere in the country.

Good luck buddy cant wait to see the results . U just confused me when you said that gun is not built to shoot the FTX bullet . I have a couple of 18 twist guns guns that will shoot Parker BEs and or Kyles 275 or 300 Accumax bullets . BUT im not shooting at the velosity your shooting . I was just curious by your comment if you thought you could over spin a bullet ? From what i have read your better off with to much rotation (RPMs spin) than not enough ? Is that correct ?

Great shooting Carl, and by the way; I want the rest of those 325's back to try again. Regarding the benches at that range, if you found a good one someone just dropped it off, they are terrible.

Hey Ron maybe my guns don't shoot that good it could be the wobbly benches wobbling just the right way every shot. No I think not.
