I just completed my newest SML. It is a 30 caliber with a 28" 10 twist Krieger heavy varmint barrel, Savage 10 action in a Boyds Thumbhole Varmint stock, LRMP and Direct ignition systems, Sighted thru a Sightron 8-32x56 scope. I made 3 plugs for it which allow it to simulate a 308, 30-06, and 300 WM. The 3 powder chambers are 308- 48gr IMR4350, 30-06- 60gr IMR4350, and 300WM- 74gr IMR4350. So far I have only shot one load to zero the gun. I have a full form die borrowed from Phil who has the same barrel but it appears that his lands are a thousandth or so narrower than mine, which makes sizing and loading cumbersome, so I don't plan to shoot a lot until my full form die is complete. Just the few shots so far with 60gr IMR4350 and a 150SST have been a blast to shoot and it should be no surprise that the velocity (2956 fps) matched right up to a 30-06 shooting the same load. It truly is like shooting a cartridge gun without the brass. Even though it will not be legal for Deer here in TN, I plan to do some varmint hunting with it and Deer hunt neighboring states where it is legal. At 14.5 pounds I won't be toting it too far. Phil has been an inspiration in my drive to build this gun. I can't thank him enough and look forward to collaborating with him to further development. Yes, I have a calibration load already and there will be pressure testing in the near future. As always, with my need for speed, I designed the 3 plug system to create the "Vari-chamber" Here are the plugs. Long is 308, middle which is the standard length HIS is 30-06, and the short one is 300WM

Are the threads going to be hurt when using the little plug.

I am anxious to dial it in Wednesday and do some pressure testing on it and the 45. My die is complete and I've sized some bullets that actually fit the barrel. To my knowledge, it is legal in North Carolina which is a little over an hour from me.
When using the short plug, some carbon could build up on the exposed threads in the barrel but it should be easily removed by running a bolt in that has some flutes cut into it. The flutes will scrape the carbon from the threads without removing metal where a tap used for cleaning could eventually wear the threads. As far as thread damage from ignition, I don't expect any as I won't be using any super fast flame cutting powders.

Got the gun on the bench today and shot some book loads that I confirmed in QL. As pressures rose above 55kpsi, groups began to tighten. Nothing spectacular to display but groups were respectable at just under an inch. I plan to increase charges as it looks like I was getting close to a node with each upper end load. The barrel is calibrated and traces have been posted in the 30CAL forums.
It really is a pleasure to shoot. I shot it today with the extended plug which mimics a 308. I left the brake off and recoil was light. I shot the gun free recoil. I never thought I would enjoy this gun this much. Phil is THE MAN! Thanks

Jerry, I would say you are the man, for testing what is going to work best safely using different powder chamber volumes, powders and bullet combinations. I belive what you are sharing is going to be very helpfull to anyone that might want to build a 30 cal. in the future. I must say it has been a great pleasure for me working with you on this project and learning a lot as we worked through the details Today I put on a 20 moa base and changed scopes to get my 30 ready to try her at 1,000 yards. The group is three shots after the first shot and scope adjustment after getting on paper .187 ctc. This is the same load that I shot the 26 shot group with. It won't be long before you are shooting small groups also. .

Very nice work on the gun. I hope you don't think that the 125gr bullet will shoot accurately at 1,000 yards because it won't. You will need to find a way to get a 190gr to 210gr boat tail bullet to shoot that small a 100 yards before you try and venture out to 1,000 yards. 1,000 yard shooting is totally different from anything else. Its not about high velocity it is about a well designed high BC bullet and a velocity of 2850 to 3,000 ft. Since your full forming your bullets I would recommend trying the old Sierra 200gr Match kings they are a very reliable performer and are easy to tune the long boat tail maybe a problem but a flat base bullet will not get the job done.
This will also be my big challenge for me to a get a 45 Caliber flat base bullet to shoot at 1,000 yards its a tall order for both of us.

I'm not expecting it to do well at 1,000 yds, just want to see if I can get it there and make some hits on steel. I do have a load for the gun with 200 SMK'S @ 2,820 fps and I may shoot some of them if I have time but that would not be as much fun as trying to connect with the 125's.
