Well my little ground hog friend showed up again yesterday, so I thought I would take a shot at him. I was shooting my .17 hmr out of my kitchen window, and the hog was on the other side of my picket fence (about 2-1/2" gap between pickets) at about 35 yards off hand. I figured shot difficultly was about a 6 out of 10. Well I didn't hit the fence, but I didn't find any blood. Now I have been getting grief from my wife for the last 2 days. I will end up getting a hard time from her until he is dead. I am now on a mission to kill any ground hog I can find to get her off my back.

We'll be careful,, if you shoot him with that ML you have it might be hard to find any remains to prove you got him.. Then your wife will think your a really bad shot... But look at it on the bright side... Tell her that's all the more reason you got to go to the challenge shoot.. You need to practice...

Jeff, I think you have a point. I told her I could guarantee a kill with the ML, but everyone in town would know I had shoot it. We live on 5 acres, so I don't want to scare the neighbors too back. I will have to try a ground hog at my brother in laws with the ML.
I told her on the way home that I was coming back next time. I had a great time and I do need the practice.

Sometimes if the hit was not in the vitals they can get to their den, you may smell it soon if that occurred.

well I just went out to put the chickens away and there is a slight smell of death in the air. I am going to walk back in the woods tomorrow after work. My wife said she smelled it too, but wasn't sure what it could have been.

I didn't but it is in a pretty thick patch of briars. It is pretty stinky right around them, I figured that is good enough confirmation for me. Even my wife said tonight that something smells dead in the woods. I am going to say, he is dead.

Well I'd say he's dead..especially if you haven't seen him any more.
