Tuesday after the Kentucky Challenge What I found out after shooting Kyle rifle was that my 1 ¾ lb. trigger was not as good as I thought. Kyle’s Jewel set under a pound was much nicer. His Night Force scope was……….yes, much nicer!.........His load was also more consistent. Congrats Kyle……..but my sights are set on you! I started out by changing out the trigger on Monday with a Shilen 2 oz. I had bought from a shooter a few years ago………….Big Difference! Tuesday started out raining but turned into mostly humid/cloudy and actually good conditions at the range. Herman could not make it as he was going to his hunt club to check trail cams and other stuff, so just Bill and I. Fouled the barrel with five shots using a 250 gr. FTX FF along with a 8/58 Clays/H-4198 duplex (sheet says 5 gr.---wrong). Outside of the first fouling shot, 4 printed in a decent .747” group. Next up was the load I should have shot at the Challenge but opted for one that had done good in the past? So, 300 gr. BE smooth sized to .4498” with 72 gr. of H-4198. This load was really hammering putting five in .680”! So now I take the same load out to 300 yards; it starts out putting two shots in one hole and then decides to start spreading the last three around for a 2.7” five shot group? Moving on to the 290 TEZ FF and the 10/60 Clays/H-4198 load as shot in Kentucky, the group opened up to 3.8” Back to the 300 BE but FF with the 72 gr. H-4198 it gave 3 in 3”, the best 4 in 3” but a democrat made it 5” for all five! And finally, I went to the 250 gr. TEZ (bought these from Rambler as they would not shoot for him. These had been previously sized and stuffed down his barrel to check fit—I knurled and FF sized them). Used the 10/60 duplex and wound up with with first three in 1.311” (sure could have used that one Saturday in Kentucky), 4 in 1.930 with all five in 2.9” Today I bought back a 8 x 32 Night Force scope I had sold a friend of mine about 5 years ago. I knew he was not using it and he agreed to sell back for what he gave me for it. So next week it will be on the rifle which should bring it up in the “Kyle” class! gif image hostingimagehosting

Keep working on that 300 BE at 300. Have you shot it at 300 with the duplex?

Yes and that was the one that went about 4" from where it should have a week ago..........that was why I abandoned the 10/60 duplex with it. I am working on a milder duplex with N-110 as the booster.......just maybe 5 gr. with maybe 65 of 4198. Or, maybe just up the 72 gr. load to 74 and see what happens?

Richard..
You did some fine shooting at the Challenge and the loads you used were very capable of taking top place, just sometimes things don't go as planed.. My proven load of straight 4198 let me down at 300 yards but did real good for the other guys that was shooting it.. I have to wonder sometimes what causes those 4 inch fliers when everything felt perfect during the shot...
Keep working on loads and maybe you'll find the perfect combination...
Jeff..

respectfully you can't "buy the stairway to heaven" jmho- but each & every competitor will be adjusting their game-just don't get 'tunnel vision" & forget about the rest of the pack of course in your bubble/again respectfully
kyle is the real deal & I'm glad to hopefully be a friend/competitor/co-cook- etc//
think I predicted his win again & gladfully so//accuracy is king! & as of right now kyle is pinnacle//hope more including me can shrink groups on a very consistent basis day in-day-out.
I would also mention just maybe this bunch is some of the worlds most accurate sml in a small high performance crowd/fwiw...time will tell if more guns/#'s will show up to compete/etc.....
love it & "i'll be back' !!!!
ps- awesome offhand shooting hank & others-even I wussed out!

Richard I to had something strange happen at the challenge My 200 and 300 groups had flyers which could have possibly been me but it seemed more like a cold barrel shot you know we had quite a wait between squads Just something to think about I to need more scope because when we shot 300 with the sun in our faces it was hard for me to see those targets in the woods But I still had fun

Yes, definitely Jimbob! That sun was a killer at 300. If we are in the same time frame at the next shoot, I might suggest we shoot the 300 first? The second group of 10 thru 20 were at a slight disadvantage with the sun at that distance. OR, get the shooting started an hour or two earlier to avoid the sun glare. Who knows, it may be raining at the next one Deadeye..................I want to see a picture of a big wall hanging Wapiti!

in my case I do have one sunshade on my burris xtrII,don't truly know if that is a difference but mine is installed because of hunting/rain conditions etc.
I will say I have had no problems @ ky optically in the sun or rain visually optically viewing the bulls-eye with either the sun or rain or mirage/fwiw power 3x15
wapiti- yes appreciate the encouragement & over the years I have came so, so close to bringing home the big one but something like usually too many cows/eyes/ears nailed me./go fig/public bulls especially//not like whats on tv................

I actually made up a sun shade from an old target and tried using it on Friday evening when the sun was directly in our faces? It almost did not make a difference? Maybe it was just the Vortex scope? Anyone have a sun shade for an older NF 56 mm. 8 x 32?

Pulled the trigger to soon? ? I meant to comment on the above post. After reading Richard's detailed information there sure is a great deal to absorb before the Spring Challenge. That must have taking some time to gather that information, WOW! Thanks for the info!
