So just wondering, I have an old encore before I found out about smokeless it was my go to gun for a long time, my buddy calls me and wants to take it with us to Kansas, so my question is what's the best load to shoot out of it? I've always just used 100 grains of pyrodex and shot the 250 shockwaves out of it. Is there any better Bullets and could I go to say measured powder?

I have a couple smokless guns but also love my Encore . My 50 cal Encore shoots 100 grains of Blackhorn and 250 or 290 Barnes bullets very well . Flat base bullets . It will also shoot any of the Dead Center bullets but have to adjust powder charge according to bullet weight .

Thanks Doug. started at 60 weight grains, ended up at 70 grains gun shot really well once I fouled the barrel, shot 4 at 100 yards and all bullets were touching went 150 and same thing then went to 200 and my group opened up, maybe need to clean the breech plug and let the gun cool a little more in between shots.. Have a ? Should I clean the gun after I'm done shooting it? I've seen some do some don't.

Don't have my .50 encore anymore but it loved 77 grains by weight of BH209 and a 275 BE.

I clean between shots . My Encore also shoots 75 grains with a 200 grain dead center very well. I shoot with a clean barrel because I hunt with a clean barrel

I hunt on a clean barrel. BH209 fouling will rust you gun just depends on your part of the country and how much humidity there is. My .45 McGowen barrel shoots pretty close to the same POI clean or dirty out to 300 yards.

Thanks guys. Me and this gun go way back have a lot of good memories with it, wanted to see if blackhorn was a better shooting powder and it held its own, gonna set it up for my son now. I will defiantly clean after shooting it.

I clean after every shot before hunting. As said the first shot is from a clean barrel also all subs are corrosive I never want to take a chance of ruining a good barrel by leaving it dirty. I usually hunt with SML but this years I am going to hunt with my new Knight Mountaineer and my new RUML as in Delaware and Maryland they have very liberal bag limits.

Shooting Precision Rifle .40cal Dead Center 200, BH 209 / 80 grains by weight & Fed 209A (magnum) primer, holding about 2" groups at 200 yards.
I clean between each shot;
1.Simply lick a clean patch run it up and down several times turn over patch and repeat, will typically do this with 2 patches.
2.Then follow up with a clean dry patch.
Good luck

Are you using Dead Centers sabots ? I have to use Harvester sabots to get my best accuracy . Also are you waiting between shots ?

I picked up a can of bh209 awhile back,want to try it in my encore 50 when I get the time.It has a 25/06 barrel on it now. Years ago I shot the encore and took plenty of deer with it before getting addicted to the smokless. Using a 40 cal 200 gr sst. Back then I couldn't get the sabots from mmp but got them out of canada from pr bullets. They worked great on deer out to 200 yds. Was using pyro select,100 to 110 grs. It shot the 250 sst's very well also. Shot one deer at 100 yds with the 195 barnes,didn't like the results so didn't use them anymore for hunting. It was drizzling rain and when the smoke cleared it was gone.It was an 18in 8 pointer.Got down and looked for blood but was none,other club members helped to look but couldn't find any blood so really didn't know which direction he went. Was up in a climbing stand 3 days later and got to smelling something dead.Got down and followed my noise to the buck I had shot three days before. It had went about 100 yds total and about 75 yds on our club and 25 yds on other club.It had a very small pencil hole just behind the shoulder.I cut the horns off and that was all I got out of the deer.We had stopped at the other clubs line because there was no blood. These are the groups I got with the 195 barnes ,the sst 200 and 200 xtp's were the same.The second pic was with the sst I think or the xtp one.All were at 100yds.

like always excellent shooting Herman ! I love Barnes bullets for hunting but i dont like that particular bullet at Blackhorn speeds . I think they work great with smokeless powders. If I'm hunting with Blackhorn I use Barnes XPB bullets . They work excellent at lower velocities .I have taken several deer along with my daughters . Hope this helps
