I recently purchased one of Jeff's custom muzzle loaders and was wondering what would be considered the maximum range for harvesting deer.

Are you using Jeff's signature load: 275GR Parker BE with 78GR IMR4198??

Depends on the bullet, the load, and the shooter. Like Kieth said there is allot to your question.
I'd start shooting the rifle, work your way out to a "target range", and make a sound decision. I wanted to shoot 500+ yards with my sml and ended up with a limit of 400 yards. I struggled figuring the wind and its too much of a variable that I felt I owed it to the game not to shoot past 400 yards.
With the bullet I'd look at BC and velocity. The design of the bullet and where it performs. If it won't mushroom after a certain velocity then that would be another limit.
Lots of info to study up on to decide where a max range would be.

The fact of hitting the deer is not really the issue I was mainly wondering about the amount of energy the bullet would retain at extended ranges.

I don't think that is the optimal LR load based on what I've seen of it, which isn't a lot and that was only at 400yds. I think there are better bullet choices for long work and as an experienced LR shooter I think you will figure that out quickly.

If you are hitting the deer in the archery pocket, as opposed to whatever angle is presented, we have a discussion. A 22 LR will kill a deer with a lung shot at 100 yds.
Extreme range shooting is more about marksmanship, field conditions and skill then ballistics alone. Nothing trumps shot placement. When the shot is put in the right place at long range, even the "fragile" bullets will do a good job after losing much of the speed that makes them come apart.
Like on the other board, this is a goat topic. BUT there is merit in the discussion on both sides. My side is use a bullet that works at all ranges with confidence....A mono.

IMO A long range load? Past 300? I would use either a 325 or 300 mh at 2650+. Energy is not the issue to get you to 500 killable yds, bullet placement or better yet a stable enough rest to get it done.
a lot of range time and perfect conditions would be needed but it is doable.
We are talking .45 cal here from a very accurate gun..

I do a substantial amount of shooting at 500 yds with my sabotless45 . For me ballistic extreme bullet is a good bullet out to about300 yds. My go to long range bullet is 325 match hunter. I feel very confident out to 500 yds but in hunting situation i tend to set my limit to 350 yds. There are so many variables to contend with and i respect the game i pursue. I don't think there's a velocity or energy issue whatsoever with the 45s and match hunter bullet. Its all about shoot placement, reading wind, and trigger man.

Hillbill is right....past 300yds is a long poke under hunting conditions.... I've killed a few past 300 with 250 and 275gn bullets.. Conditions have to be perfect and you need to know how your gun shoots... Zen

This was a setup I used last year for a 300 yard kill shot and would have been comfortable to 400 but that is my self imposed limit. Just like bow hunting. I practice at extended ranges but limit my shots on game to 40 yards.

That's a great looking setup you got there...I've never hunted like that...I'm a spot and stalker...I'd like to try hunting out of a blind some day... Zen
