since things are a little slow I thought I would post up my new project gun I have dubbed Tote um pole.
this gun is purpose built to be a walk about do all gun for Illinois and Iowa this year, my thinking is this, short and fast with a robust enough barrel to shoot full power loads but fairly lightweight (under 9 lbs unscoped), and very accurate. so here is what it takes to build such a gun with Jeffs priming system.
SS 700 cf action, trued face, .187 machined lug
#6 Brux .450-.458 18 twist with a 5" shank to start ( now over 4" front of lug) 23" then a brake of Jeff's making. the barrel is about to get 10 flutes to reduce weight.
Mcmillan HTG stock @ 2lbs 4 oz before cutting out channel and prepping for bedding, it will lose the swivel studs and get flush cups epoxied in the left side, will also get a short Seekins pic rail on the front of the stock for a QD Atlas bipod. ( this is my favorite hunting stock of all time)
BDL bottom metal, ( will get the storage compartment)
will get bolt fluting/ handle skeletionized/ aluminum knob (weight savings)
aluminum bolt shroud with standard firing pin
aluminum single shot follower epoxied in place
I have a Jewell trigger pictured but it will likely get a Timney in the interest of weight savings
the base/rings are DNZ one piece aluminum tactical, this setup only weighs a little over 4 ozs, it will be bedded to the action, will see how well it holds up, verdict is still out.
this gun will get melonite treatment on all the SS parts and the aluminum stuff will get Black Iced, hopefully it will meet my expectations when its finished, time will tell..
Jeff did the machine work and made me a funnel, it will take his priming modules. next time you see it things will look completely different and hopefully I will have it done in time for the spring shoot.

Can't wait to see the finished product. What will be the source of ignition?

That is going to be a light deer stick. Those Illinois deer are in trouble!

Very nice!! I was the one Jeff was talking to when you called him a couple of days ago and he wanted a weight on that barreled action. I'm gonna be a copycat!!! Nice looking setup.

I like the gun and the concept. I wanted to build an very light muzzy at one time but eventually the fire faded. I'm anxious to see the finished product.
I don't think you will have any problem with the DNZ mount. What glass will you chose?

Good looking rifle, It will shoot Bill. IMO, there is no need to pack around 13 pound rifles. Some day lets talk about carbon wrapped barrels, but please don't mention this to Hank, as he does not need another project, ha ha, Ray

As far as loads go, It should shoot heavy doses of either of the 4198s with any of the bullet weights I want to use, likely the 300-350 range, the brake will be a must with all but the 275s.
slower powders like 3031 will not be an option, not enough barrel length unless i use a booster.
My slave 4.5x14 Conquest will sit on top for a while and might get replaced with a VX-6 3x18 later.
I hope to be able to shoot to 450 accurately from a good rest, both Illinois and Iowa have the potential of that kind of shot. Hopefully I will get that opportunity in both states.

Very nice looking gun. Should be a joy to tote around, and I bet she'll be quite a shooter as well. Looking forward to the completed pics.
Good job.
